After 25,000 hours of operation, the old flight simulator in the Tölzer mountain rescue center has no longer served its purpose.

Its successor is a big step into the future: it is very close to the original.

Gaißach/Bad Tölz

– A “family celebration of rescue” was celebrated on Thursday in the mountain rescue center on Flinthöhe.

Numerous representatives from rescue organizations and politicians gathered to put the new H145 flight simulator into operation.

It replaces the previous one, which has logged over 25,000 operating hours over the past 15 years.

“A milestone,” said Thomas Lobenstein, chairman of the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service, in his welcome.

The aim of the new simulator, which was financed by the mountain rescue service with its own resources, is to make air rescue sustainable, explained Lobenstein.

“We take responsibility for the rescuers and their safety,” emphasized Manfred Welzel from the Mountain Rescue Foundation.

Here in the center, processes can be trained and teams can familiarize themselves - so that they are perfectly prepared in the event of an emergency.

Because, as Gerhard Opperer, who works as a winch operator himself, made it clear: “People would die if we didn’t have winch rescue.”

In the mountain rescue center, the emergency services could be trained close to reality, develop materials together and network, emphasized State Secretary Sandro Kirchner.

“What you train on a simulator doesn’t have to be trained on a real helicopter.” This saves fuel and CO2.

As Opperer mentioned, it wouldn't work without training on real helicopters.

“This is the only way we can maintain our high level.”

The new simulator, built by an Austrian manufacturer, is an almost exact replica of the real Airbus H145 helicopter, which in turn is built in Bavaria.

As Kirchner said, eight of these helicopters will be used by the police and the Bundeswehr in the future.

The new simulator is therefore an “investment in the future and worth its weight in gold for people”.

The emergency services like the new H145.

“This thing is crazy,” enthused Opperer.

The interior was faithfully recreated.

To make the exercises even more realistic, rotor noise inside and outside as well as downdraft can be generated.

The winch can be attached to the right or left as required; the conversion takes about ten minutes.

There is a sliding bar on both sides for special military and police forces.

The big advantage of exercises on the simulator: “If we have to explain something, we freeze the situation – you can’t do that with a real helicopter,” says Opperer.

Mountain rescue operations technician Jost Gudelius explained that they had tried to work with the manufacturer to build a training cell that was close to the original.

“We succeeded very well.”

Pastor Manfred Wurzer then cheerfully spoke the words of blessing.

“When it comes to flying for us, it’s the ascension.

This is a one-way ticket, so you can't simulate it.” However, the rescuers should always get a return flight.

After the blessing and the cutting of the ribbon, State Secretary Kirchner was allowed to fly around the hall and was also close to a live demonstration.

Special police forces rappelled down from the simulator onto a roof and stormed a building.

Two mountain rescue workers were lowered into impassable terrain.

Each group showed what they can practice with the new simulator.

Tobias Vogt from the mountain rescue service commented: “The special thing here is that you can try everything.”
