Concerned, surprised, critical: The reactions to the resignation of Mayor Michael Stolze in Markt Schwaben are different.

Markt Schwaben

– The employees in the town hall were the first to find out from their boss on Wednesday morning that huge things would change at the end of May.

Michael Stolze, mayor since May 2020, announces to the assembled team that he will be stepping down from his job in a few months.

The market town councilors and their deputies only found out about this at short notice, sometimes by chance.

However, some who belong to the select group of the so-called advisory board (such as the mayors and parliamentary group speakers) received an email on Tuesday evening asking them to meet for a special advisory board meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

At least some people have an idea of what it's about.

Late yesterday morning, the public relations department in the town hall confirmed at the request of the EZ: Yes, this is no longer just a rumor.

And refers to a press release that community spokeswoman Sabrina Biertz and the new manager Melanie Idek are working on by 1:55 p.m.

Declaration of resignation: “I am no longer doing justice to my role”

It literally says: “I (Mayor Stolze) weighed this step very carefully and examined my situation several times from all conceivable perspectives.

Finally, I come to the conclusion that I am no longer qualified to carry out this responsible office.

My job description contains a very clear mandate, namely to use all my strength for the benefit of the market community.

In the last few weeks I have increasingly realized that I am no longer doing justice to my role (...) Together with the market town council and the town hall administration, we have been able to change, initiate and achieve many things.

Overall, the Swabian market is in an excellent starting position to look into a positive future.” We will now provide information about the next steps as soon as possible and are in close coordination with the responsible offices, committees and authorities.

Members of the market town council expressed surprise yesterday.

Third Mayor Raphael Brandes (Greens), referring to the confrontational debate last Thursday on the subject of asylum accommodation, says that he would have “wished Stolze a little more robustness”.

Stolze may have underestimated what comes with being the head of a community.

The mayor was perhaps too humane, but on the other hand that always earned him a lot of sympathy.

Surprise and criticism of the Swabian market

CSU parliamentary group spokesman Heinrich Schmitt was also very surprised, but pointed out that the tone within the plenum, including personal attacks against the mayor and each other, had recently become very worrying.

Schmitt speaks of an unbearable tone that has often spread in Markt Schwaben.

ZMS parliamentary group spokesman Sascha Hertel is equally surprised.

However, it was still too early for him to make an assessment, although he could spontaneously say that he did not want to follow Stolze's move.

Hertel says: “It’s still completely unclear to me what happened to the mayor.”

Hertel is critical of the way yesterday's information process was conducted.

In his opinion, the advisory board would have been the first forum, not the workforce.

An impending change at the top makes it more difficult to do everything politically to close the rifts that have arisen in Swabian society as quickly as possible.
