It took almost a year: Now the gymnasium and teaching kitchen at the Karl-Meichelbeck-Realschule have been renovated and brought up to date.

The district administrator came to visit.

Freising

– The students at Karl-Meichelbeck-Realschule can finally go back to their gymnasium and their teaching kitchen.

After around a year of away sports and cooking, everyone is now happy that a bit of normality is returning to the secondary school.

On Tuesday, District Administrator Helmut Petz visited the secondary school for a flying visit.

His impression: “Yes, it was all very successful, we are on the right track here!”

What Tassilo Brunner from the building construction authority explained at the site visit: “It took almost a year, and the gym and the teaching kitchen were closed for that long.”

No wonder, because the gymnasium was demolished down to the shell and completely renovated and a lot of work also had to be put into the teaching kitchen.

What has emerged from this is impressive, as Petz noted.

A different color for each kitchen unit

Finally playing sports in your own hall again: During the general renovation, students had to travel to the Luitpoldanlage for their basketball game.

While muffins were being baked diligently in the teaching kitchen, Petz inspected the drawers and was impressed by the color separation in the kitchen.

With matching colored aprons, every student knows where their area in the kitchen is and where the associated utensils can be found.

What's new: A digital update of the teaching options directly in the kitchen, as well as a narrow partition of the room in favor of a small spectator stand for the double sports hall.

Events in the gym are now possible

Headmaster Bernd Friedrich was particularly happy that normal school operations could be resumed: “That was a massive restriction because the children had to go to the Luitpoldanlage to do sports.” He is equally happy that the gymnasium is now open again also sports teacher Birgit Müller, who blew the whistle at the break because the buffer walls were being demonstrated.

“There is now foam rubber in between,” explained Brunner.

The gym can now also be used for events and provided with sound without annoying cables or the like lying around on the floor.

“We learn from gym to gym,” emphasized Brunner.

Hands-on work was also done in the fitness room next door, where weights were once lifted.

“But there is no longer any need for that,” Friedrich explained, which is why a ballet barre with a mirror and a climbing device can now be found there.

The illumination of the hall has also been significantly improved.

“Now we have LED lighting, whereas previously 500-watt spotlights heated up the hall,” the headmaster remembered.

While everything here is already sparkling clean, there was still a tour of the dusty construction site.

There is still a lot of work going on in the workrooms.

“We urgently need the rooms here again by the end of September, there will be final work - but we are on the right track,” says Friedrich.

“You’re a bit proud now, aren’t you?” Petz asked the headmaster.

Friedrich could of course say yes, although there would still be a lot of work to do.

The overall measures are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of 2025.

Cost of the renovations: currently 19.2 million euros.
