Even six months after the hailstorm in Benediktbeuern, new damage is still being discovered at the monastery.

“There is still a long way to go,” says the press spokeswoman.

Benediktbeuern – Around 20 companies are currently commissioned to repair the hail damage at the Benediktbeuern monastery.

The situation is still complex.

“We are still not at the end of the damage mapping,” says administrative manager Hilmar Gries.

Of around 44,000 square meters of roof area, around 20,000 were destroyed.

The renovation is complicated because you also have to keep an eye on the distribution of loads on the roofs.

“We have to apply everything evenly so that there are no shifts in the statics,” explains Gries.

In addition, previous damage would now come to light, for example to the basilica.

“These are not covered by insurance.” However, it makes sense to comprehensively renovate such areas.

“That’s why we continue to rely on donations,” says Gries.

Guest houses must remain closed for a longer period of time

The work on the roofs in the monastery will last until 2025.

“We still have a long and costly road ahead of us,” says Katrin Birk, press spokeswoman for the monastery.

Even six months after the storm, new water damage continued to occur, for example in the Baroque Hall.

“It’s still being dried at the moment,” says Birk.

“That’s why no events are currently possible there.”

The two guest houses with a total of 21 rooms are also a problem child.

“They are so damaged that they will have to remain closed for a long time,” says Birk.

The operational downtimes here are not covered by insurance.

“We don’t have enough proceeds to refinance youth work, which is very painful and causes concern for the future.”

Big praise to the craftsmen involved

Nevertheless: “In view of the immense extent of the destruction, we are satisfied with the progress of the restoration measures,” say both Birk and Gries.

The cooperation between the craftsmen is very good, as is the atmosphere.

“This is not a given on such a large construction site,” says the head of administration and pays great praise to everyone involved.

There is relatively good news from the south arcade wing, which is known to be undergoing extensive renovation work.

Because the statics had already been strengthened and the roof boarded at the time of the storm, the damage was limited.

Only the original windows on the north side were destroyed; they are now being replaced.

The monastery administration is confident that this area can be inaugurated in autumn 2024.

“That would be a nice signal for all of us,” says Gries.

Tours of the monastery have recently been available again

In addition, some things in the monastery have already reopened: guided tours have recently started taking place again on weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

The monastery shop is also open during its regular hours, reports Birk.

You can also enter the entire cloister again; the exhibition “Passion and Passion” can currently be seen here.

And the monastery café will be back for guests after its company holiday from March 14th.

Youth work, however, still takes place under restrictions.

The outdoor facilities, including the destroyed educational garden of the action center, can only be repaired gradually, reports Katrin Birk.

“Unfortunately, the extensive restoration of the green areas and the reforestation of the trees are not completely covered by the insurance.” Here too, donations are required.
