Freising is celebrating a historic anniversary.

This is celebrated with a special limited edition coinage.

The coin design contains Freising's history.

Freising

- Saint Korbinian with the bear at his feet on one side.

The Freising town hall, St. George's Church, Marian column, city coat of arms and year on the other side: This is what the new coin looks like.

And it will be available in limited numbers - from Saturday, March 16th, as Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher announced at the monthly press conference on Monday.

From 39.50 to 1999 euros: Korbinian coins in different designs

The idea behind the special coinage that Sparkasse Freising Moosburg is launching for the city's anniversary “1300 Years of Korbinian in Freising” is the predecessor of Sparkasse boss Michael Langauer: It was already clear to Johann Kirch in 2023 that the Sparkasse wanted to get involved in the anniversary - among other things just the medal in different versions.

In copper it costs 39.50 euros (edition of 500 pieces), the version in fine silver costs 75 euros (edition of 300 pieces) and the gold medal costs 1999 euros.

There are only ten of the latter available.

Michael Langauer presented one of them to Freising Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher on Monday.

As the city boss said, the valuable piece will go to the city archives.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

City archivist Florian Notter selected the appropriate motif for the coin, as Marietta Pichlmayer, sales manager of the Sparkasse, said.

Notter took a little excursion into history on Monday: Minting medals has a great tradition in Freising.

“A prince was sitting here and it was an issue for reasons of princely self-portrayal.” 1300 years of Korbinian also means 1300 years of Freising, “in a certain way it is also a city anniversary.”

That's why the initiative for a medal comes from the city for the first time, together with the Sparkasse.

Interested parties must be quick - planned as the only edition

Important for anyone interested to know: If you want a coin, you have to be quick.

Because, as Langauer said, this will probably remain the only requirement.

On Monday Langauer also gave great praise to head of the department Rupert Widmann, “who was a mainstay in the development of ideas”.

Widmann, in turn, thanked the Sparkasse for its willingness to support the anniversary year: In addition to the medal and participation in the parade, the Sparkasse is making the atrium available for exhibitions for the festival year.
