The police give tips on how to protect yourself.
Munich – Telephone fraudsters stole around 24 million euros in Bavaria last year.
“Initial evaluations for 2023 show a further increase in the number of cases in these areas of crime in Bavaria,” said Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann from the CSU on Thursday in Munich.
“The trend is likely to be comparable nationwide.”

According to figures from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), shock calls and grandchild trick cases in particular have increased significantly.
Accordingly, the number of cases in this area increased from more than 3,000 in 2020 to more than 13,500 last year.
At the same time, according to the LKA, the loot increased from almost two million to more than 13.5 million euros.
Prevention campaign against telephone fraud by the police in Bavaria and Saxony
Older people are particularly at risk of becoming victims of telephone fraud, as the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office explained in a statement.
People often lose large parts of their savings, said CSU Minister Herrmann.
With a joint prevention campaign from March 4th to 8th, the police authorities in Bavaria and Saxony want to draw attention to the methods used by telephone fraudsters.
“With our joint prevention campaign we want to wake up potential victims.
My appeal: take our tips seriously and also raise awareness among your older people.
Very important: call the police immediately.
Only then will there be a chance of removing the perpetrators and those behind them from circulation,” said Herrmann about the campaign.
“Key messages” from the police: How to protect yourself from telephone fraud
Never allow yourself to be put under pressure.
Hang up as soon as the person you are talking to or chatting with asks for money.
Do not disclose private financial information.
Do not tell anyone where you keep money or valuables (e.g. jewelry).
Never give or transfer money to unknown people or accounts.
Remember: the real police or other officials never demand cash, transfers or valuables from you to carry out an investigation or keep your money safe.
With the real police, the number 110 never appears on the display.
Be suspicious if someone doesn't introduce themselves by name on the phone or if they say they are an acquaintance or relative you don't recognize as such.
Make sure the caller is genuine, but never call back using the number displayed on the phone.
Call your loved ones on the number you know or talk to your neighborhood about unusual calls before making a decision.
