Rosario Central
, the last Argentine soccer champion after winning the 2023 League Cup, decided a few months ago to remodel its stadium.
Not only is the idea to modernize the
Gigante de Arroyito , but also to add about 6 thousand more places for
Canalla
fans
and reach
a capacity of 48 thousand spectators
.
To achieve this, the
field will be about 80 centimeters below
the level it had until last year and that forced excavation work to be carried out that brought a great surprise: a series of archaeological finds that include
an old tunnel and a ball that became a relic
.
“
Pure scoundrel history in the Giant.
The workers carrying out the expansion and remodeling of the stadium found an old tunnel in the Cordiviola stalls that they decided to use as a new entrance to that sector.
A ball was also found, another example of the Auriazul history that resides in our house,” reported the official account of Rosario Central on its social networks.
Diego Decunto
, architect in charge of the work, said some time ago that they expected to find this type of findings.
In fact, at the beginning of the remodeling they had already found remains of the stands that were built before the Giant renovated the stadium for Argentina 1978.
“It didn't surprise me as a professional, one knew that under the river stalls was the old stand that was popular at the time.
In short, it is the same tier that continues and becomes the lower headers.
Only on the side of the river (Paraná) had it been covered by what was the extension of the stalls in the work that was carried out for the 78 World Cup,” Decunto explained in statements to the press after the first findings.

And he continued: “Obviously it has been 40 years since that sector of the old popular stand was not exposed until the moment we had to carry out the intervention for the new tunnel.
Accessing through the single tunnel, a part of what was the old stand was seen again and was once again exposed
.
In that World Cup, the Gigante de Arroyito hosted six games, including
Argentina's unforgettable 6-0 victory over Peru
that allowed the team led by
César Luis Menotti
to qualify for the final in which they would beat the Netherlands 3-1. at the Monumental to win his first star.
The other commitments were Tunisia-Mexico, Poland-Tunisia, Mexico-Poland, Argentina-Poland and Argentina-Brazil.

El Gigante de Arroyito showed on their networks the progress of the reforms, which seek to expand the capacity of the stadium.
The work carried out by the Board of Directors headed by
Gonzalo Belloso
consists of three stages.
Currently, they go through the first and then those that will be linked to giving “security and comfort” to the stadium will come.
The substitute benches on the field will move to the other side after the play.
A tunnel will be installed between the two at the level of the playing field to avoid using stairs.
