The number of new doctors in Israel will decrease in 2022 - according to a report published today (Thursday) by the Ministry of Health, which reviewed the trends in manpower in the health professions in the last decade until the end of that year.
This decrease takes place after a trend of an increase in this figure since 2010, despite the efforts being made in Israel to increase the number of doctors there, which is still lower than the OECD countries.
According to the report, in 2021, the number of doctors in Israel was 2,025, while in 2022 the number dropped to 1,946.
According to the data, this year the number of graduates in medicine trained abroad increased, but the number of graduates trained in Israel is actually small.
The rate of the number of doctors per thousand people remains lower than the OECD countries, where in 2022 it stood at 3.4 in Israel compared to 3.7 in the OECD.

The Ministry of Health stated that despite the decrease in the number of new doctors in 2022, in the 2023 data there is an upward trend, with 2,486 new licenses.

"For this purpose, we have increased the number of medical students and we are going to expand the number of clinical fields - which are an acute resource for those studying the profession and we operate on additional levels.
In the mental health system, we published a grant program for psychologists in the public sector and we are working on salary agreements in psychiatry and other fields.
Many more challenges have been prepared for us and we are committed to face and find solutions regarding manpower and ensuring public health in the immediate term and with a forward-looking view."
