ROME - A large exhibition at Palazzo Braschi celebrates the human and political journey of the socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti, on the occasion of the centenary of his death.

From March 1st to June 16th the Rome museum retraces the life of the socialist leader, deputy and secretary of the Socialist Unity Party, from his youthful beginnings to his national affirmation, from the battles for democracy to the opposition to fascism, of which he was among the first the totalitarian nature, up to the brutal murder perpetrated by the Mussolini regime.

Life and death of a father of democracy', edited by Mauro Canali with the coordination of Alessandro Nicosia, tells of the profound dignity and high civic sense that Matteotti demonstrated in a tragic moment in our history, becoming the archetype of the adversary tenacious of fascism.

An example of him, animated by a strong civil and moral impulse.

On display are unpublished materials and original documents - photographs, manuscripts, objects, period books, newspaper and magazine articles, films and documentaries, works of art, ceramics, musical pieces dedicated to the political leader - from prestigious archives and foundations.


    The exhibition is divided into four sections, which retrace the life of Matteotti and the dramatic transition from the liberal state to the fascist dictatorship: the first is entitled 'The young Matteotti' and illustrates the commitment in Polesine in favor of laborers and sharecroppers, the academic career and membership of the Socialist Party;

the second, 'National political commitment 1919-1924', distinguishes his parliamentary activity, his political action against fascism.

The section 'Kidnapping and death 1924-1926' starts from the affirmation in 1924 of the PSU as the strongest party of the left, including the famous speech of 30 May 1924 in Parliament against the fraud and violence of the fascists, up until the kidnapping which was victim on 10 June 1924 in Rome, to the assassination and mock trial in Chieti.


    Finally, the section 'The myth of Matteotti' focuses on the politician's legacy, from the commemorations to his lasting residence in the collective imagination.
