Unemployment is falling slightly in Saxony-Anhalt

The number of unemployed was 87,588, 548 or 0.6 percent lower than in January.

The unemployment rate was 8.0 percent, compared to 7.8 percent in the same month last year, as the Federal Employment Agency announced on Thursday.

In February 2023, 85,711 people were registered as unemployed in Saxony-Anhalt.

Nationwide, the number of unemployed people rose by around 8,000 to 2.814 million people in February compared to the previous month.

The unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, 0.4 points above the rate for the same month last year.

For the statistics, the Federal Agency used data that was available up to February 14th.

“In February, the labor market in Saxony-Anhalt remains stable and follows the usual seasonal pattern,” explained the head of the Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia regional directorate, Markus Behrens.

“Although unemployment is falling less sharply than usual, overall fewer people have registered as unemployed than in the previous month.” At the same time, more people have taken up employment.

More vacancies were reported, which indicates the beginning of a spring revival.

A large proportion of the unemployed continue to be out of work for a year or more.

In February, almost 32,700 women and men were considered long-term unemployed.

That was over 2,300 more than in February 2023. The proportion of long-term unemployed people out of all unemployed people in the country was 37.3 percent in the current reporting month.

In a comparison of the federal states, unemployment in Saxony-Anhalt was reportedly below the rates in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen.

Within the state, the unemployment rates were highest in the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz (10.5 percent) and Stendal (9.7 percent) as well as in the independent cities of Halle (9.5 percent) and Dessau-Roßlau (9.4 percent). .

They were lowest in the districts of Börde (5.5 percent) and Harz (5.8 percent).
