In Bavaria alone, 65,000 addresses are in areas at risk of flooding.

German insurance companies fear billions in damage.

These districts in Bavaria are particularly at risk.

Bavaria – 65,000 addresses in Bavaria are at risk of flooding because they are in flood areas.

The General Association of the German Insurance Industry issued this warning last Tuesday, February 27th.

That is why German insurance companies fear immense flood damage in the future to buildings at risk of flooding, such as residential buildings, commercial buildings, agricultural businesses and public facilities.

“Due to climate change and therefore more frequent extreme weather events, billions of euros in damage are inevitable,” explained GDV deputy managing director Anja Käfer-Rohrbach.

A sign warns of flooding, the street behind it is already partially flooded.

Such warnings, like those here in Hemmendorf, could be issued more often in the future.

Kitzingen district most at risk of flooding

But the regions in Bavaria are at different levels of risk.

The Kitzingen district is most threatened.

There, 2,800 of 33,000 addresses - that corresponds to a share of 9 percent - are in a potential flood area.

This is followed by the Deggendorf district with 3,400 buildings at risk, which means a share of 8.2 percent.

The Kronach district follows suit, with 2,000 buildings threatened and thus a rate of 6.1 percent.
