Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has died at the age of 84, his daughter reported this Thursday in a publication on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.
Who was the country's eighteenth prime minister (1984-1993) died peacefully and surrounded by his family, said Caroline Mulroney in a publication on X.
Mulroney's family said last summer that he was recovering and showing improvement every day after a
heart procedure
, which followed treatment for prostate cancer he underwent in early 2023.

Mulroney, who led the Progressive Conservative Party, won the presidency with the largest majority in his country's history when he was elected in 1984.
He entered office with massive support.
However, a faltering economy and high unemployment rate led him to resign in 1993 with the worst approval ratings in the history of Canada in the 20th century.
He was succeeded by Kim Campbell
, who became Canada's first female head of state.

Mulroney led the country into the North American Free Trade Agreement, with the United States and Mexico, in 1992, and authored a transformation of the Canadian tax system.
As prime minister, he was close to US presidents Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush, promoted the thaw between Moscow and Washington in the aftermath of the Cold War, and
imposed sanctions on South Africa during the apartheid era
