He just can't help it: ZDF veteran Theo Koll is leaving retirement behind and returning to his long-time employer.

Berlin – Theo Koll (65) was a fixture at ZDF for three decades.

The fruitful collaboration between the journalist and the Mainz broadcaster began in 1990.

From editor he worked his way up to presenter and editorial director.

Koll demonstrated his political expertise in formats such as “Frontal 21”, “Politbarometer”, “ZDF spezial” and “Berlin Direkt”.

At the end of 2023 he retired after 33 years at ZDF.

However, Theo Koll doesn't seem to have lasted long without work.

The long-time head of the ZDF capital studio is now returning to the TV screens and becoming an expert on the “ZDF-Morgenmagazin”.

In a statement, the station announced that Koll would “classify political events and comment on them with his own punchline” on individual broadcast days.

“We are very pleased that Theo Koll is still getting up early for our viewers even after his work in the ZDF capital studio has ended in order to classify the political events and explain complicated connections in his special linguistic style,” explained Andreas Wunn ( 49), editorial director of the “ZDF-Morgenmagazin”.

Koll is one of “the most prominent political observers” and therefore a valuable addition to the format.

Another new addition to the “ZDF morning magazine” is Philip Wortmann (29).

The young journalist (“ZDFheute live”, “heute Xpress”) will moderate the show.

“I have known the 'ZDF-Morgenmagazin' from a viewer's perspective for years.

Sitting in front of the camera in the studio is exciting and a great honor for me,” said Wortmann happily.

It is not known whether Theo Koll and his famous British shirt collar will also be present on this show.

In any case, viewers will be able to see the ZDF legend regularly again in the future - retirement can wait a few more years.
