The prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny will be laid to rest this Friday in Moscow at the Borisovskoye Cemetery after a funeral ceremony at 2 p.m. CET.
Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, the German ambassador to Russia, also plans to attend the funeral, as the
German Press Agency (dpa)
reports.
There are concerns that the Russian government could crack down on Navalny's supporters.
Meanwhile, Navalny's team has set up a live stream on YouTube, which will be available from 10 a.m. CET.

Moscow – Alexei Navalny's widow, Julija Navalnaya, announced the funeral of her late husband on X (formerly Twitter).
The funeral service is scheduled to take place on March 1st at 2:00 p.m. local time (12:00 p.m. CET).
Navalny's body will then be buried at the Borisovskoye cemetery.
The family chose the Russian capital Moscow as the location.

The team of the deceased opposition member has also called for people to attend the memorial service despite the expected police presence.
Visitors are advised to come as early as possible as a large security presence is expected.
Mourners could otherwise be denied access to the funeral.

However, fear of possible consequences did not stop many people from mourning in the Russian capital shortly after the news of Navalny's death.
At the Lubyanka memorial site, mourners placed flowers for the deceased Kremlin critic, reported a reporter from
IPPEN.MEDIA
from Moscow.

They filmed mourners who gathered in the square and asked those present to leave the square.
Since the square is right next to the domestic secret service, many of the people were hesitant to openly show their grief.

As an opposition politician, Navalny organized protests against the Russian government under Vladimir Putin for years.
After a poison attack in 2020, he was treated in Germany for months.
However, in January 2021 he returned to Russia and was immediately arrested.
After he disappeared for a long time in December 2023, Russian authorities said he was transferred to a prison camp in northern Russia.
