France showcase, concerts, light art and much more: Weilheim celebrates the anniversary of its twin town relationship with Narbonne almost all year long.

The program is only just being created – and yet it already promises great things.

Weilheim

- “So many beautiful ideas and so much commitment”: Jutta Liebmann, head of the Office for Location Development, Culture & Tourism in the local town hall, is completely enthusiastic about what the citizens of Weilheim are doing to celebrate the town twinning with Narbonne, which was established exactly 50 years ago want to contribute.

Around 20 clubs and institutions recently came to a meeting in the town hall and presented their ideas and plans.

A lot is still in flux, but one thing is already certain: you can look forward to many French moments in Weilheim in 2024 - to colorful, cheerful and exciting activities.

Promotions throughout summer and autumn

Numerous program items are already planned from June and well into autumn.

In addition to the 34th French Week from July 4th to 7th on Marienplatz, there will be many more French days across the city this year.

The official anniversary ceremony will take place on July 3rd in the city theater - with many invited guests and of course a delegation from Narbonne.

Guests from the city on the Mediterranean may also come to Weilheim for the Oberland exhibition at the beginning of October.

A “mini beach” on the church square?

It is a matter of honor that many city institutions are taking part in the anniversary year: Weilheim's music school wants to play "Francophiles" at the "Music in the City" on June 15th, and the adult education center is offering extra language courses.

There will be a book exhibition and a country quiz in the city library.

The city museum is planning three exhibitions, including one with caricatures on the German-French town partnership and democracy.

The city of Weilheim will of course also be publishing an anniversary brochure and offering boules balls to borrow.

And if a sandpit on the church square works out again in the summer, according to Liebmann, it could become a “mini beach” with deck chairs – greetings from Narbonne plage by the sea.

High school resumes student exchanges

The water rescue service and Protestant youth also want to bring a French flair to the lake festival at Lake Dietlhofer See in mid-July.

The Kneipp Association wants to set its summer festival in the Au under the motto of twin towns, and the inner city action group wants to decorate shop windows with pictures from Narbonne.

The local history and traditional costume association is planning a maypole path at Maypole Square (where a tree will be erected again this year) - with photos from visits to France.

By the way, the Weilheim high school is resuming the student exchange with Narbonne this year, and the TSV is also considering reviving the exchange.

“Weilheimer Polka” and “Narbonn Waltz”

Numerous groups will bring French music to life in the anniversary year, from the city band (for example at the BfW Serenade in the Au) to the Weilheim choir circle and other choirs to the pop duo “MehrSaiter”.

The French organist Henri-Franck Beaupérin will be a guest at the Weilheim Organ Summer on August 3rd.

Heinrich Gerold composed a “Weilheim Polka” and a “Narbonn Waltz” - and made the sheet music available for rehearsal.

Many other institutions want to take part in the anniversary year, from the Boy Scouts to “smART – faireinte Bühne”, from the “Klangfabrik” to the naval comradeship and all shooting clubs to the “Goggolori” boules club.

The organizers also want to invite a street artist from Narbonne to the “Street!Magic!Festival!” in September.

And then there is light art – which is just as popular in Narbonne as it is in Weilheim.

At the beginning of October there will be simultaneous light art events in both twin cities, if possible with video transmission.

There is no question: this anniversary year will be something to see and hear.
