Stephanie Gier and her dad Jochen are a perfect team.

The 23-year-old convinced the 55-year-old to also become a member of the Karlsfeld Volunteer Fire Department.

My dad used to help me with my math homework.

Now he can learn something from me.

For Jochen Gier, at the age of 55, a long-forgotten childhood dream is coming true: the Karlsfeld native is now a firefighter.

He is following in his daughter's footsteps.

Karlsfeld – Jochen Gier hesitated for a long time and pondered whether he should take the step at his age.

But then the 55-year-old made the decision and joined the Karlsfeld Volunteer Fire Department last summer.

The mechanical engineer would probably never have done it on his own initiative, as Jochen Gier explains.

The reason why he now goes out on missions in full gear with siren and flashing lights is sitting across from him and smiling at him: his daughter Stephanie.

“She gave me the final impulse,” says Jochen Gier, and his voice reveals how grateful he is that his daughter remained so persistent.

Every two weeks, Stephanie Gier approached her dad and encouraged him, because for the 23-year-old it was very clear: the fire department and her dad?

This fits like a glove.

Her father could then finally use his truck driver's license, which he has had since his military service but never used.

Stephanie Gier is also with the fire department.

However, for much longer than her dad.

She is one of the 46 new members that the Karlsfeld fire department was able to win in 2020 as part of its successful membership campaign.

“I saw these cool posters back then.” Stephanie Gier, who played with fire toy cars as a child and wanted to work in emergency services as an adult, was gripped and fascinated.

Now she has also been able to inspire her dad to volunteer.

They both remember their first mission together well.

“It was the middle of the night.

I was already wearing my pajamas when the alarm went off and my daughter came up and shouted: Daddy, Daddy, we have to go!

I wasn’t prepared for it at all.” His daughter was.

While her dad was getting dressed, Stephanie was waiting for him in the car so they could head to the fire station together.

It was one of those stormy nights from last year that caused chaos across the county.

Father and daughter picked up the branches from the street together.

It was their first and most exciting mission together so far.

Stephanie Gier was on site in the summer of 2022 when a man was resuscitated at Lake Karlsfelder.

“It was very mentally stressful,” she says.

Nevertheless, moments like these confirm Stephanie Gier in her calling: she wants to save people's lives.

She is just beginning her medical studies and wants to work as an emergency doctor in the future.

She has given first aid courses several times in the past.

And she has also been giving her dad valuable tips in this area for a few months now.

In the fire department, the roles of father and daughter are reversed.

Now it's Stephanie who explains everything to her dad.

“My dad used to help me with my math homework.

Now my dad can learn something from me.

It’s nice that I can now give that back,” says Stephanie Gier and smiles.

Dad also has to smile when he talks about his daughter showing him how to properly tie knots, for example.

Their shared hobby at the fire department is like an invisible bond that has brought the two even closer together.

At family celebrations or over dinner, the two enjoy exchanging ideas about their experiences at the fire department.

Jochen Gier and his firefighter colleagues were once called to a fire.

“We set out with four vehicles.

In the end it turned out that only one meatloaf was burnt.”

Jochen Gier, who successfully completed his basic training in November, wants to train as a machinist.

Then the Karlsfelder can fulfill a childhood wish that was long forgotten and finally drive a fire engine.

He already has the necessary truck driving license.

Germany-wide record at the Karlsfeld fire department - the success of the campaign continues

No other fire department was able to gain as many new members in the same period as the Karlsfeld fire department.

This was achieved through an extraordinary campaign with a lot of wit and ingenuity between 2020 and 2021. Even three years later, the fire department is able to keep its new recruits.

“Our recipe for success: We held information evenings and explained to those interested exactly what to expect.

We have always openly communicated the amount of time involved in volunteering,” explains Michael Konrad, one of the initiators.

Every newcomer is given a godfather or godmother.

Even without targeted poster advertising, things are looking good at the Karlsfeld fire department.

“We have strong growth,” says Konrad.

37 women and men joined between 2022 and 2023.

But the Karlsfeld fire department cannot rest on its laurels.

“We are well positioned, but we have to stick with it!” emphasizes Konrad.

Because the number of missions is increasing.

While the fire brigade had to be deployed 250 times in 2020, last year was the first time in the history of the Karlsfeld fire department that the 400 mark was broken in number of missions.

“Without the successful acquisition of members and the additions from the last two years, we would have an extremely high time commitment for each active member and therefore the burden would be distributed too low,” says Konrad.

There are 101 adults and 29 young people active at the Karlsfeld fire department (as of January).

“We are happy about girls and boys, women and men who enjoy working with us on a voluntary basis to ensure safety for the citizens of the Karlsfeld community in the future,” says Konrad.
