The felling of the linden trees on Thursday (February 29) on the Penzberg town square had immediate political consequences.

On the same day, Erich Sczepanski announced his resignation as chairman of the Citizens for Penzberg (BfP) - combined with harsh criticism of the city.

Penzberg - Erich Sczepanski justified his resignation as chairman of the non-party voters' association Citizens for Penzberg (BfP) to the Rundschau with the felling of the two listed trees, which are said to have played a sad role as crime scenes in the "Penzberg Murder Night" of April 28, 1945.

He also misses the support of his own BfP faction in the city council - in the building committee in 2023 they approved the felling of a total of three damaged lime trees and new plantings.

Regarding the felling of linden trees on the Penzberg town square, Sczepanski had submitted an application for monument protection

Sczepanski has been chairman since 2021, and new elections are taking place this year.

When it came to felling linden trees, he campaigned for the preservation of the striking trees.

In autumn 2023, he applied to the district office to examine whether the remains of the “Lindenallee” on the southeastern side of Bahnhofstrasse have the status of a monument.

Sczepanski justified this with the historical significance of the Lindenallee, especially because of the “Penzberg Murder Night”.

On February 23rd, the district authorities actually classified two of the three linden trees as architectural monuments, but allowed the city to cut them down based on the new damage report.

The two linden trees on Bahnhofstrasse in Penzberg are memorials to the “Penzberg Murder Night”

Sczepanski had already announced his resignation in such a case, and on February 29th he confirmed this to the BfP and the city by email.

“Especially today, the preservation of places of remembrance of the terror of the brown hordes is of particular importance,” he writes.

These memorials would also include the two linden trees on Bahnhofstrasse.

“Theatrical cordoning off” of the trees: The city created the mood for felling, criticizes Erich Sczepanski.

The city of Penzberg created the mood for the felling of the town square linden trees with a “theatrical atmosphere”.

Sczepanski accuses the city of “theatrically cordoning off” the trees.

After the monument protection was announced, she would have “created a mood” for the political goal of the removal.

He describes it as “holding the stirrup in the unspeakable culture of repression.”

Sczepanski therefore sees “no possibility for a trusting collaboration,” he tells the Rundschau.

Not even with his BfP: The parliamentary group did not campaign for preservation.

As a result, his only option would be to resign.

“I’m consistent about that.”

BfP parliamentary group leader Jabs regrets Sczepanski's resignation

BfP parliamentary group leader Armin Jabs regrets his resignation.

Sczepanski put “a lot of passion” into the tree issue.

The future of the club's management is currently unclear.

First deputy chairman is Markus Braun.

Jabs emphasizes that he is “in good spirits” and that the BfP will continue to “position itself in a stable position”.
