Eleven people were hospitalized and some 130 evacuated due to a massive fire in a residential building in London's upscale South Kensington district early Friday, firefighters reported.

The fire hit a terraced house converted into apartments in the southwest of the British capital, near the Natural History Museum in London.

Half of the ground floor of the five-storey building was on fire when emergency services arrived, the London Fire Brigade described on X.

“The fire spread from the ground floor towards the the highest floor and the roof.

Crews are working hard to (...) prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings

,” said Steve Collins, a fire official at the scene.

Five people were rescued using ladders and around 130 residents evacuated from the building and neighboring buildings.

“Approximately 11 people were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital

,” firefighters added.

Fifteen fire trucks and some 100 firefighters were mobilized, according to the same source.
