The municipality of Gmund has another building with monument protection status: the so-called Pfannenberg Villa near the Mangfall has been included in the list of the State Office for Monument Preservation.

The Gmund local historian Gerhard Seidl doesn't just have something remarkable to say about this.

Gmund - Mayor Alfons Besel recently informed the local council: The so-called Pfannenberg Villa, located high up on the Mangfall high bank and southeast of the handmade paper factory, is now a listed building.

The list of significant buildings is now enriched by another object.

The focus was actually on another building that the Gmund local researcher and archivist Gerhard Seidl recently had in mind: a Gumpwerk located below the villa, built in 1744.

The history of the villa and the Gumpwerk are linked to the name Pfannenberg.

Carl Pfannenberg Sr.

(1879-1963), who ran the Gmund machine and handmade paper factory together with the businessman Ludwig Alois Kohler (1874-1921) and was co-owner until his death, had the villa built in 1925.

His descendant Carl Pfannenberg (83) still lives in the house today; he was also co-owner of the paper factory until 1995, which is now managed by Florian Kohler and Torsten Dreke.

At the instigation of Carl Pfannenberg, Gerhard Seidl delved into the Pfannenberg property.

“Not in the villa, however, but in the Gumpwerk,” reports Seidl, who uncovered something remarkable.

Lots of history inside

It is thanks to Carl Pfannenberg that the seemingly inconspicuous building looks good.

In 1999, he had the building, which his father had bought from the Catholic Church in 1939, restored at great expense by experts.

There's a lot of history inside.

“It’s a 280-year-old water lifting station,” says Seidl, going into detail.

“Spring water collects in a pool, is collected and pumped up with a large water wheel that drives two pump cylinders.

With this," says Seidl, "the former Gmund rectory and the church, 600 meters away, were supplied with water until about 100 years ago." What Seidl also found out: The Gumpwerk has the patents of Hanns Reiffenstuel (1548-1548) from Gmund on four points. 1620) and his son Simon Reiffenstuel (1574-1620).

First pipeline in the world

“Hanns Reiffenstuel was the ducal court architect who was responsible for the Trift facilities and all bridges in Upper Bavaria,” reports Seidl.

“As is well known, between 1617 and 1619, together with his son, he had a 31.5 kilometer long brine pipeline, the first pipeline in the world, built from Bad Reichenhall to Traunstein with seven such hoists.” Seidl had already had display boards at the Reiffenstuel fountain in front of the Gmund town hall There is also a true-to-original replica of the Reiffenstuel elevator in the Traunstein saltworks park.

Given the importance of the Gumpwerk, local researcher Seidl was very surprised when he learned that it was not the Gumpwerk, but the villa above it that was classified as worthy of protection by the State Office for Monument Preservation after a visit in the summer of 2023.

“It’s actually strange,” says Seidl.

Center for handmade paper production

But the State Office for Monument Preservation sees the classification of the villa in connection with the Gmund Papier handmade paper factory.

“The community of Gmund is an important center for handmade paper production, in whose context the country house was built,” said a spokeswoman for the state office.

The factory, whose managing director was Carl Pfannenberg, was significantly involved in the tradition of paper production throughout Germany.

“The country house built by Pfannenberg is an expression of the builder's claim to representation and evidence of his economic possibilities as a managing director,” the state office continues, which also goes into the architectural style of the house, which was built in 1925 according to the plans of the Hans Rauch office.

The compact building cubature with sparse historicizing elements can be attributed to the local style of the time.

“The Heimatstil is a sub-area of reform architecture that overcomes Art Nouveau and paves the way to modernity,” says the description.

“The country house therefore also serves as a classic example of the development of reform architecture in the country.” The interior design in particular is a well-preserved example of interior design in the Art Deco style.

For Gerhard Seidl the story is not over yet.

He can certainly imagine that the Gumpwerk will also be taken into account by the monument conservationists.

He has already sent a detailed description to the state office.
