The damaged three linden trees on Penzberg's town square have been felled.

After an hour, the action was over on Thursday evening.

The city was also allowed to remove two listed trees.

Penzberg - There has been a heated fight over the three linden trees in recent months.

In the end it almost became a tree farce.

Because of traffic safety, the city wanted to cut down the damaged trees on Bahnhofstrasse and replace them with new ones.

The majority of the building committee said “yes” in April 2023.

Then we waited for a second report, which now confirmed the sad condition of the linden trees.

The district office had classified two linden trees on the Penzberg town square as architectural monuments

But on February 23, the State Office for Monument Preservation classified two linden trees as architectural monuments - including the linden tree at the main intersection, which the report described as being in "acute danger of breakage", and which is said to have played a sad role in the "Penzberg Murder Night" on April 28, 1945.

The city reacted harshly: a request was made to the district office at short notice on Wednesday (February 28) to completely close Bahnhofstrasse and Karlstrasse in the area.

This is the only way to ensure traffic safety, Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) had previously announced the procedure at the city council meeting on Tuesday evening (February 27th).

At the same time, an application for permission to fell the listed linden trees was sent to the district authority.

The district office gave the city of Penzberg permission to fell the tree at short notice

On Thursday (February 29th) events came to a head.

Shortly before 1 p.m., the town hall reported that the district administration's monument protection department had received a permit to fell the two listed linden trees.

The basis was the second damage report, said district spokesman Dominik Detert when asked by Rundschau.

After examining the statements in the report, the district office found them to be conclusive.

The felling was “not an administrative act,” emphasized Carl-Christian Wippermann from the environmental department in the town hall to the Rundschau; the decision of the building committee was being implemented.

The felling permit is subject to conditions, especially when it comes to new plantings.

When these will take place is unclear.

According to Wippermann, funding for monument appreciation is also being examined.

Felling took place quickly on Thursday on the Penzberg town square

On Thursday evening around 7:15 p.m. the specialist company arrived with special equipment.

The sawn-off trees were lifted using a grabber.

“They were able to be removed safely,” reports town hall spokesman Thomas Kapfer-Arrington.

The timing was deliberately set in the evening so as not to disrupt commuter and city bus traffic.

Some onlookers had gathered.

Trunks are being stored and the city is considering how to deal with them in the future

The three trees were felled around 8 p.m.

They are currently stored behind the public toilet on the town square and are being examined extensively by passers-by.

What will happen to the tribes is still unclear.

“They will definitely be stored,” says town hall spokesman Kapfer-Arrington.

“We’ll think about something suitable, but without any time pressure.”
