The insolvency of the Maisacher Brewery has consequences for the economy associated with it: the Gasthaus zum Sandmeir in Hörbach, which only reopened in June 2023, is closing.

“As quickly as possible,” as innkeeper Erkan Can announces.

Hörbach – The Wirtshaus zum Sandmeir is scheduled to be open for the last time next Sunday, March 3rd.

“Or maybe even sooner,” fears landlord Erkan Can, who has recently been left in droves by the serving and kitchen staff.

Brewery managing director Michael Schweinberger leased the traditional building on Althegnenberger Straße from the homeowner, who now lives in Affing, and sublet it to Can.

Both contracts were terminated due to the insolvency of the Maisacher brewery.

Lots of layoffs

This in turn made his staff deeply unsettled and nervous, says Can, who runs another restaurant in Königsbrunn.

“There were a lot of layoffs.” Now the end of the road has been reached, especially since the staff shortage is already serious in his industry.

Schweinberger, on the other hand, believes that the insolvency of the brewery “came at just the right time for the landlord to pull the ripcord”.

After a “great start” a year ago, sales recently collapsed.

Which Can, in turn, strictly denies: “I would have liked to continue, especially since I put a lot of money into it that is now gone.”

The homeowner had also invested heavily.

According to the innkeeper, continuation would not fail because of him.

Especially since other breweries have already expressed interest.

But the transition period cannot be managed without staff, especially since the additional costs continue.

The homeowner, who is currently ill, did not want to comment to the Tagblatt about current events and the future of the house.

Surprise at the town hall boss

The current developments around the inn are the talk of the day in the town of 400 souls.

The residents are wondering what will happen next.

Toni Drexler, the former district caretaker who lives in the middle of the town, cannot understand the current development.

“The building is in great shape and has just been renovated with a new pub kitchen.”

However, he is not aware of any plans for the further project either.

The Monday board

The Sandmeir has been the home of the cabaret since Toni Drexler founded the Hörbacher Montagsbrettl in 1975.

But after the inn was closed for more than a year in 2022, the Brettl had to move to inns in Hattenhofen (Eberl), Luttenwang (Frietinger) and Adelshofen (Pschorrstadl) and make appropriate appointments.

The next Montagsbrettl dates are March 4th and 18th and April 12th, see www.montagsbrettl.de.
