Now it's official: The commuter route from Dachau's Josef-Effnerstrasse to Karlsfeld's Alte Bayernwerkstrasse, which is popular with drivers, especially from Dachau-Süd, will become a bicycle route;

only residents are allowed to drive there.

Not everyone in the city council is enthusiastic about it.

Dachau - In the end, it only depended on Deutsche Bahn whether the Dachau-Karlsfeld connection between Josef-Effner-Straße on one side and Alte Bayernwerkstraße on the other side would finally become a bicycle street with the additional sign “Residents free”.

This means: Cyclists will soon have priority on the connection, which runs parallel to the B304 and is primarily used by commuters from Dachau-Süd.

Cars are only allowed to drive there if they are residents or have a justifiable request to use the path.

The Karlsfeld local council had long wanted the traffic there to be reorganized in order to put a stop to commuter traffic.

Those responsible in Dachau's building authority and city council had also long since signaled their approval.

Ultimately, it was only a matter of a 160 meter long section in the Dachau city area that belongs to the railway and which has now granted permission to make its parcel usable “by dedicating it to a restricted public path with the release of local traffic”.

This means, cheered traffic officer Volker C. Koch (SPD), that a “cycle route between Dachau and Karlsfeld that is as continuous and easy to ride as possible” can finally be put into operation.

In his eyes, the connection represents an “important axis” in the city's cycle path network. Drivers can certainly be expected to take a detour of around one and a half kilometers long - even if, as Koch admitted, it is the Josef-Effner and Alte connection Bayernwerkstraße is “used by many”.

Peter Gampenrieder (ÜB) saw this differently, although he did not want to deny the introduction of a cycle route with all its rights for cyclists.

He was concerned with the “Residents Free” sign and thus practically blocking access for cars: “This is a connection that has grown from Dachau-Süd!” In the future, non-residents would either have to “think up something about who they are visiting on the street want” and therefore have a concern, “or they are traveling illegally”!

In Dachau-Süd there is a lack of understanding about the regulation, which the city should take seriously.

And Gampenrieder continued: “For me, it’s not about pitting drivers against cyclists.” For him, it’s about giving up something that “has worked well for decades.”

Wolfgang Moll (We) agreed with Gampenrieder.

There were never any accidents or problems on the connection.

“There was only stress when there was a bottleneck on the B 304.” So he asked himself whether the new regulation was legally tenable?

Mayor Florian Hartmann did not understand the criticism.

Didn't we jointly agree months ago on the introduction of the cycle path with a “residents free” sign?

Apart from that, the city could of course change its decision - but this contradicts the will of the Karlsfelders: "That only leads to confusion if you are allowed to drive through from our direction, but not from the Karlsfelder direction!"

Environmental speaker Thomas Kreß (Greens) wondered whether drivers might have put pressure on Gampenrieder and Moll?

In any case, he doesn't want to give in to this pressure and “throw in the towel”!

The city will now take care of the signage for its part of the new cycle connection.

Karlsfeld local councilor Franz Trinkl (SPD) recently explained that in the spring, after a two-year planning phase, the cycle route will finally begin!
