Summary.
Twenty-five years ago, the arrival of a new operator on the French telecoms market shook up this well-established sector.
With its high-speed Internet subscription at very competitive prices, then its equally competitive telephony offer, Free has attracted millions of consumers.
Its founder Xavier Niel is a former computer hacker.
Without a diploma, he began to earn a lot of money in the 1990s thanks to the pink Minitel.
In 2004, he spent a month in pre-trial detention at the Santé prison in Paris, in an old case of misuse of corporate assets.
Today, Xavier Niel is a billionaire, the tenth richest person in France.
Source Code retraces this extraordinary journey with Aurélie Lebelle, journalist in the economics department of Le Parisien.
