According to economist Viktoria Grimm, there were many mistakes in early retirement.
Therefore, she only calls for an exception to the pension at 63.
Berlin - While Germany's pensioners are eagerly awaiting the pension increase in summer 2024 and the new pension package from the traffic light coalition, one pension topic is being heated up again and again: the so-called pension at 63.
Retirement at 63: Economics Grimm has an idea for people with endangered health
The economist Martin Werding even advocates for the abolition of pensions at 63 at IPPEN.MEDIA. Meanwhile, his colleague on the expert council, Viktoria Grimm, has a different idea in mind.
She advocates that “pension at 63” only be made possible to people with at-risk health.
Social organizations in particular repeatedly complain that ending retirement at 63 means “an early death” for many hard-working people.
“Early retirement without deductions should be possible if there are health reasons,” the economist told the newspapers of the
Funke media group
.
The current “retirement at 63” regulation creates an incentive for many people to retire earlier, with or without deductions.
“High earners in particular make use of it.
This exacerbates the shortage of skilled workers,” complained Grimm.

Pension reform at 63: Economic wise Grimm sees too “many pension gifts”
The then coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD introduced early old-age pensions without deductions from 45 years of insurance in 2014.
When it was introduced, the government forecast around 200,000 applicants annually - the forecasts are significantly exceeded year after year.
Employers, the Union, but also politicians from the Greens and FDP from the traffic light coalition had spoken out in favor of moving away from the “pension at 63”.
Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) has rejected such demands.
Grimm criticized that “many pension gifts” had been distributed in recent years.
This is one of the reasons why the federal subsidy for pension insurance increased from 77 to 112 billion euros annually between 2003 and 2021.
The baby boomer generation is now approaching retirement.
Grimm demanded that the retirement age should be adjusted to life expectancy.
In the past, however, the Labor Minister had clearly rejected a “pension at 67 or 70”.
Pensions at 63 are being put to the test: the FDP is also considering special rules
In addition to the abolition or severe restrictions on the “pension at 63”, the FDP is considering a special rule for early retirement in order to regulate it anew.
Above all, against this background it will become clear how the new pension package II fits into the picture.
The traffic light has at least promised that the retirement age will not increase, pension contributions will not increase and pensions will not decrease either.

However, it remains to be seen whether this also includes the “pension at 63”.
After all, the new pension package has VdK President Verena Bentele calling for a big hit.
For her, “pension is not a stock market game”.
Instead, apart from the discussion about early retirement, she even called for an increase in the pension level to 53 percent.
