Magistrate Alberto Iannuzzi will not run as president of the Basilicata Region.

With a statement to ANSA, the president of the Potenza Court of Appeal made his "no" official for the regional elections of 21 and 22 April.

In the broad field, however, negotiations are continuing, with the Democratic Party which, through the regional secretary, Giovanni Lettieri, has confirmed its positive assessment of Angelo Chiorazzo, who is not "welcomed" by the Five Star Movement and other political forces of the coalition of centre-left.

With an open letter, 50 "free citizens of Lucania", also supported by a signature collection, had asked the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, the president of the M5s, Giuseppe Conte, "and all the progressive forces" to nominate Iannuzzi.

"I thank - said the magistrate, who is close to retirement - the numerous citizens who signed the appeal for my candidacy and the many people who, showing great trust in my person, asked to nominate me, but I am not available for a commitment in politics so burdensome, also in light of the limitations introduced by the Cartabia law".

Iannuzzi's statement arrived while the regional direction of the Democratic Party was still underway in Potenza, in which the former Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, also participated, several times brought up as a gubernatorial candidate, but always firm on his support for Chiorazzo.

Position shared by the Lucanian secretary of the dems.

"We cannot - underlined Lettieri in his report - fail to note the difficulty of centre-left parties and movements in converging on the figure of Chiorazzo, a profile which cannot be ignored in order to build a winning coalition".

The opinion of the former Democratic Party senator, Salvatore Margiotta, is different.

"It is absurd to transform the regional direction into a referendum for or against Chiorazzo who is a very worthy and quality person. As far as I am concerned - added Margiotta - the reasons for the unity of the centre-left coalition prevail over any other argument".
