Almost all parties supported the large demonstration against right-wing extremism in Weilheim, which attracted 5,000 people in February - but the Free Voters did not.

There was now a remarkable explanation for this.

Weilheim – The Weilheim large demonstration against right-wing extremism once again made waves in the town hall on Thursday evening.

As reported, around 5,000 people were there on February 3rd under the motto “Never again is now!”

Vote Democracy!” came together.

All factions and groups in the Weilheim city council supported the event (at least the district association on the part of the ÖDP) - except the Free Voters.

“We were not asked,” explained FW local chairwoman Romana Asam afterwards in response to a Tagblatt query.

And her city council colleague Susann Enders, who was also the district chairwoman and FW general secretary, was surprised that Green city councilor Brigitte Gronau - who helped initiate the demo - had not spoken to her personally on the sidelines of the previous council meeting.

Free voters were also contacted

Four weeks after the demo, there was an unequivocal answer in the city council.

BfW spokeswoman Brigitte Holeczek read out a joint statement from the parliamentary group leaders of the CSU/FDP, the Greens and the BfW as well as the deputy group spokespersons from the SPD and ÖDP.

They want to “clearly point out,” it says, that all group leaders and group spokespersons – including the FW – “were invited by the organizer on January 26, 2024, according to the email distribution list.”

In addition, at the end of the city council meeting on January 25th, Gronau “pointed out loudly and clearly about the demo in the presence of all parties and groups”.

The organizers “advertised the demo publicly with posters and through the media,” it continues: “At least 5,000 people were aware of it and took part in it.” Therefore, “the leader of the meeting and the organizing team of the demonstration cannot be blamed for missing “To provide information.”

Demo recognized as an “overwhelming sign”.

Weilheim's city center, the authors of the statement look back on the demo itself, "became a place for two hours where citizens peacefully stood up for our common basic values and good democratic coexistence."

This is “an overwhelming sign and an enormous organizational achievement for the ‘We in Weilheim’ initiative.”

Shaking of the head at the AfD representative's statement

The two FW city councilors – who were not mentioned by name in the statement – did not comment.

Ullrich Klinkicht, who sits on the city council alone for “WM Miteinander”, emphasized to our newspaper that he had not been asked whether he wanted to co-sign the statement.

AfD representative Rüdiger Imgart said at the council meeting that he also thanked the demo organizers.

It is “important that we stand together against the true right-wing extremists, the AfD is at your side.”

However, this sounded like mockery to many council members, which is why some were outraged against such “assistance”.
