Who wants to be a “Hero”?

The “Anti-Littering Campaign” makes it possible.

The municipal waste management of the Dachau district is launching the so-called “anti-littering campaign” at the beginning of the bathing season.

It is intended to raise awareness among the population not to throw waste into the area in the future.

There is something practical for smokers among the environmental offenders: free pocket ashtrays.

District - It looks like a test tube with a cap and, according to Antje Burger from the municipal waste management department in the Dachau district, is "made of plastic with a recycled content."

With a little imagination, one could interpret the pocket ashtray as a raised index finger from the district office to instill in smokers, but also other careless contemporaries, “a change in consciousness and ultimately reduced littering behavior in hotspots,” according to the authority.

That is the goal of the “anti-littering campaign” (for German lovers: “waste prevention campaign”) that the district office will launch in the Dachauer Land at the end of April/beginning of May.

It was presented at yesterday's meeting of the Environment, Transport and District Committee.

The “main litterer group” are young people between 18 and 30 and smokers.

A long-term study has shown that young people in particular are careless, said Burger, who added: “One in three cigarettes worldwide is disposed of in the environment.”

The question, of course, is: How should the “litterers” (for German lovers: “garbage sinners”) in the “hotspots” (for German lovers, “hot places”) be purified?

The reminders from the district office (for English fans: “Reminder”) have come up with a variety of things;

where they came up with the slogan (for German lovers: “motto”) of the campaign, “Can’t get in – be a hero!”

I celebrate you for that!” from an advertising agency.

That leads to costs.

The district office has so far paid 5,700 euros in advance.

As far as the implementation of the campaign is concerned, the authority remains vague.

There are “further costs for post-production of the media depending on the number of participants in the district,” according to the meeting template.

An inquiry is currently underway in this regard.

Many municipalities have already shown interest, including the large district town of Dachau, said district office spokeswoman Sina Török when asked.

Back to the measures: In addition to the ashtrays for smokers (for English fans: “smokers”), which, according to the district office, are in “dispensers” (for German lovers: “cardboard dispensing stands”) at cigarette sales points, recycling centers, in the district office and in the communities will be available free of charge, there will be environmental education in schools, for example with material, lectures or posters.

To avoid waste, counter stands and stickers are displayed in restaurants that point out the innkeepers' obligation to offer "reusable packaging in the to-go area" (for German lovers: "take-away area").

Posters and banners are hung at the “hotspots”, which actually mean train stations, lakes or green spaces.

Litter bins will be given stickers, butt collection events will take place and there will be information stands.

Finally, the campaign is highlighted on social media.

Carsten Schleh from the Greens called the campaign “totally important”.

And for CSU parliamentary group spokeswoman Stephanie Burgmaier it is an “absolutely important issue”.

However, there were also critical voices in the plenary session.

Stefan Handl (CSU) said: “Prevention without sanctions and control doesn’t work.” He also wanted to know what purpose the pocket ashtrays actually make.

Waste management employee Burger listed: cigarette butts that are still burning go out, the costs are low, they are a nice “give away” (for German lovers: “promotional items”), they can be transported smell-proof in handbags and are reusable.

Sylvia Neumeier (SPD) was not entirely comfortable with this list.

She said: “I am afraid that we are making fools of ourselves!” As the managing director of the Drobs drug counseling center, she works a lot with young people.

Therefore, she suggested, we should make contemporary “slogans”.

Because it is to be feared that not every 25-year-old hip-hopper driving a BMW M5 wants to be a hero.
