Dogwoods look even better if you trim them every now and then.

But if you're hoping for insect-friendly flowers, you should leave the secateurs behind.

Dogwoods are extremely popular in the garden because they attract everyone's attention even in winter.

The blood-red dogwood and the Siberian dogwood in particular catch the eye with their bright bark when walking in the forest.

The wood is no less beautiful in autumn, when the lush leaves turn from green to red.

In spring the dogwood provides food for the insects, but only if the cut has not been too harsh beforehand.

Dogwoods do not need to be cut back very often.

A rejuvenation cut in spring is enough for new shoots to emerge.

As

My Beautiful Garden

knows, the pretty discoloration of the bark is even more beautiful if you cut the plant regularly.

Please note the following when pruning:

  • Whether your dogwood can tolerate a cut depends on the species and growth characteristics.

Flower dogwoods, for example, do not require pruning, while white and yellow dogwoods require pruning shears or hand saws more often.

However, the “Venus” variety is an exception; you should work here in June after flowering.

  • In general, pruning in March can hinder dogwood flowering.

If you want to attract insects such as bees to the garden with the white flowers, you should refrain from this cut.

  • Blood dogwoods grow particularly sprawling, which is why corrective pruning should be carried out in the first few years.

In spring, young bushes are cut back by half to two thirds.

This creates a particularly large number of branches, as

    My Beautiful Garden

    notes.

  • According to native-plants.de

    , the Siberian dogwood

    tolerates cutting very well.

Only the young shoots of the Siberian dogwood are colored red, which is why it is advisable to cut the bush more often.

In February to March, remove all shoots that are about three to four years old.
