Highlights: Too few rental apartments: How the state is paying extra in Erding. Figures show how much money the state pays to private tenants because people receiving public benefit and low earners are not able to do so. A three-digit number of new social housing units have been built in the district in recent years - at the Thermengarten in Altenerding and in Klettham-Nord by the district's Upper Bavarian Homestead. In Bavaria alone, the current stock of social housing must increase by more than 195,000 by 2030.

Living in Erdinger Land is expensive – and unaffordable for more and more people.

Figures have now become public that show how much money the state pays to private tenants because people receiving public benefit and low earners are not able to do so - and there is far too little social housing available.

According to statistics from the Federal Employment Agency, that is 687,000 euros per month in the Erding district alone.

The job center recently supported around 1,200 households with a total of 2,100 people.

In addition, every month there is an impressive sum for housing benefit.

In addition to the job center payments, the state also covers the costs of accommodation for many other people who rely on it: older people with limited pensions, for example.

The construction union IG Bau published the figures in a press release - and derived political demands from them.

“It is right and important that the state pays housing benefit and covers the costs of accommodation.

But social housing is even better.

“They make the state independent of any rent gouging on the housing market,” says Harald Wulf from IG Bau Oberbayern.

In the long run they are the cheaper solution for the state treasury.

“In addition, social housing is the best brake on rent prices for the housing market,” Wulf is convinced.

The union accuses the state of “mismanagement of housing support.”

The federal and state governments have “massively neglected” social housing for decades.

This can also be clearly felt in Bavaria.

“As a result, we now have a dramatic shortage of social housing across the country: in the Free State alone, the current stock of social housing must increase by more than 195,000 by 2030.

“Over 910,000 more social housing units will then be needed nationwide,” said Wulf.

So more urgently needs to be built.

But the problem of affordable housing has another facet.

Citizens' benefit recipients actually have to leave their traditional rental apartment if it is too expensive.

This regulation was suspended during Corona.

But to this day, the Aruso job center also pays existing rents that are above the assessment base.

Managing director Monja Rohwer explains that many tenants simply cannot find cheaper accommodation and therefore have to stay in the apartments, which may be more expensive.

A three-digit number of new social housing units have been built in Erding in recent years - at the Thermengarten in Altenerding by the district's housing association and in Klettham-Nord by the district's Upper Bavarian Homestead.
