The Portuguese Volksgarten existed in Bamberg for almost half a century.

The club has been permanently closed since the end of February - the board was at its limit.

Bamberg – Next year the Portuguese Volksgarten in Gaustadt near Bamberg would have celebrated its 50th anniversary.

However, this celebration will no longer take place - the Portuguese club is closing its doors permanently.

The closure also marks the end of the club's restaurant, which was regularly visited by both club members and other guests.

Club premises closes - despite division of tasks: board felt overloaded

Ana Sousa knows why the club ended.

The 63-year-old is part of the club's board of directors, along with four other members.

Whenever the club premises were open - in the summer from Friday to Sunday, in the winter on the weekend - they looked after their guests.

The tasks ranged from serving guests to closing the cash register.

“We all had our normal jobs at the same time.

At some point it was far too much for us,” says Sousa as the reason for the closure.

There was actually a list with the club members divided into shifts.

In the end, most of it would still have been up to the board, explains the club's second chairwoman.

“All we could do was close it down”: efforts were unsuccessful

In order to relieve the board of directors, new club chairmen should be elected.

According to Sousa, no one among the 90 club members was able to do so.

And the attempt to lease the club premises has repeatedly failed.

“All we could do was close,” explains Sousa.

For them, the club's demise was predictable - the following generations would no longer have been so actively involved: "If it hadn't happened this year, it would probably have happened next year or the one after that."

Farewell gifts and thanks on the last day of the club: “hurts my heart”

The club had its last day on Sunday, February 25th.

We cooked and ate together one last time in the club restaurant.

Some regulars brought farewell gifts and thanked us for the past years.

“That was really touching and impressive,” says the 63-year-old.

“The club’s departure is sad and hurts the heart.

A cultural era is coming to an end,” explains Sousa.

Above all, she thinks it's a shame that the club members no longer see each other regularly and that the club's children can no longer play with each other as often.

Nevertheless, she doesn't give up hope for the Portuguese Volksgarten: "Maybe a miracle will happen."
