In addition to the striking linden tree, in the middle of the Eberhofer roundabout near Frontenhausen there is also a display of Franz Eberhofer (Sebastian Bezzel, right) and Rudi Birkenberger (Simon Schwarz) - this remained undamaged.

The striking tree in the middle of the Eberhofer roundabout was felled in a night and fog operation.

There is great horror at the clear-cutting - and the police are in the dark.

Frontenhausen - Normally a roundabout is not really anything special - but in the case of a very specific roundabout in the Lower Bavarian market town of Frontenhausen it is.

This is “probably the best-known roundabout in Germany,” the Eastern Bavaria Tourism Association announces on its homepage.

Why is that?

Because a certain Franz Eberhofer frequents there regularly, a police officer in the fictional village of Niederkaltenkirchen and the star of local crime films such as “Dampfnudelblues”, “Sauerkrautkoma” or “Leberkäsjunkie”.

After the tree felling at the Eberhofer roundabout: the mayor immediately filed a complaint

When Eberhofer investigates, it's usually about murder.

The case that the Dingolfing police currently have on the table is not quite as tragic - and yet the roundabout is the focus.

That's where unknown people felled the striking tree in the middle on the night of March 1st to 2nd - using a chainsaw, the crooks made short work of the 20-year-old lime tree.

There it still stood: the 20-year-old tree in the middle of the Franz-Eberhofer roundabout in Frontenhausen.

When Frontenhausen's mayor Franz Gassner's phone rang on Saturday morning, his deputy told him what had happened - the town hall boss didn't hesitate for long and drove to the scene himself.

“It looks really bad there,” he says in an interview with

Merkur.de.

It was Gassner who then called the police and filed a report.

The Eberhofer cardboard cutout remained intact

“Who does something like that?” That’s the big question that many people in town and beyond are now asking themselves – including Mayor Gassner.

In any case, one could say that the perpetrator did not exactly have experience in felling trees, as the town hall boss explains.

“It was cut unprofessionally.” Gassner can only speculate about the reasons for the crime.

A test of courage or simply pure destructiveness, anything is conceivable.

Or was it an Eberhofer hater?

This actually seems rather unlikely, as the stand with a picture of Eberhofer actor Sebastian Bezzel and colleague Simon Schwarz next to the tree remained completely undamaged.

Unfortunately, the police can't do much more than speculate at the moment.

“It is difficult to investigate,” says police spokesman Jan Perche from the Dingolfing police, because the evidence is “extremely poor” and there are no witnesses yet.

“It doesn’t look like anything without a tree,” says Franz Gassner – which is why the tree should be replaced.

However, it is not the community of Frontenhausen that is responsible for this, but the Dingolfing-Landau district, as the Eberhofer roundabout is located on its area.

However, it is not yet clear whether the new tree will be a linden tree again.

(Yes)
