One of the points of interest on the first day of Expoagro 2024 was the presence of government representatives from the Agriculture areas of the Southern Cone countries.
Representing Brazil, Cleber Oliveira Soares, deputy executive secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of the neighboring country, arrived in San Nicolás, who in dialogue with
Clarín Rural
highlighted the common points on the regional agenda.
“There are many issues to be addressed together, especially those that have to do with the sustainability of our agricultural, livestock and forestry systems.
And we will also take the opportunity to support Argentina's candidacy for the Presidency of the World Organization for Animal Health," commented the official.
One of the issues that undoubtedly demand the development of consensus by the ministers of the region is the uncertain trade relationship with the European Union, crossed by protests by agricultural producers in the old continent.
“Everyone in the Southern Cone is worried about these demonstrations, but I think it is natural.
Countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile are very efficient in sustainable production.
So for us it is important to have our own measurement factor, whether in corn production or in livestock, so that we can show our efficiency, our low-cost production of grains and protein of animal origin,” he explained.
-In Brazil, are there already producers who have their carbon footprint certified?
-Yes, we have producers of various agricultural products that are certified.
For example, we have a very important low-carbon beef protocol.
We use pasture to make soil cover, followed by direct seeding and often integrated with forests.
With this we do not only mitigation but also the incorporation of carbon into the soil.
