March started like spring.

But what will happen in the coming days and weeks?

Meteorologist Dominik Jung gives an insight.

Frankfurt – On the first weekend after the meteorological start of spring, the weather in Germany was surprisingly mild.

Sunday in particular was sunny and warm almost everywhere in the country: the warmest was in Munich at 18.9 degrees, followed by Mannheim (18.5 degrees) and Offenbach (18.1 degrees).

Warm air masses have the upper hand - March reaches temperatures of around 20 degrees early

Although temperatures reached the 20 degree mark on the first weekend in March, some weather experts are still worried about a late emergence of winter later in March.

The reason for this may also be the still cold night temperatures.

In Munich, where it was warmest on Sunday, it was also one of the coldest on Monday night at -1.6 degrees.

However, meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

gives the all-clear.

Night frost is still possible in isolated cases this week and on Monday night, but: “Next week there will be no March winter in sight in Germany either.” The warm air masses have the upper hand, so in the current week Maximum temperatures of 17 to 18 degrees are possible again, and even up to 20 degrees on the Upper Rhine.

So Jung doesn't believe winter will return later in March.

“It’s all nonsense,” says the expert.

“On the verge of an extensive high” – these are the weather forecasts for the first full week of March

Despite fog in some areas with visibility sometimes below 150 meters and isolated night frost in the south, the first full week of March is likely to be as mild as it was at the weekend.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), Germany is currently “on the verge of a widespread high over Eastern and Northeastern Europe”.

Although weak low-level foothills make the weather slightly unstable in places, fairly mild air masses are still in effect.

In the north and west, Monday will start with partly cloudy to overcast conditions, with occasional drizzle possible.

After the fog clears up, there will be some sunny periods at times, especially in the southeast it is likely to stay sunny and dry for a longer period of time.

The maximum temperatures are 10 to 15 degrees, on the North Sea 8 and on the Baltic Sea up to 11 degrees.

Fresh gusts from the northeast can be expected on the Baltic Sea, while it will remain slightly windy in the other parts of the country.

Tuesday night will be predominantly cloudy to very cloudy.

Light rain is possible in places from the North Sea to the Ore Mountains and in the southwest.

Even then, fog formation is possible again in some areas, but in the northeast it will remain partly clear.

The temperatures are 0 degrees, otherwise 7 to 1 degrees.

In the middle of the week the temperatures drop slightly - but sunny periods are also possible

According to the DWD, on Tuesday it will often be densely cloudy and with intermittent rain.

However, it is likely to remain dry in the north and northeast.

The weather service sees the greatest chances of sunshine from the North Sea to Fläming and during the day in the southeast of Bavaria.

On Tuesday it won't be quite as mild as before, with a maximum of 5 to 9 degrees northeast of the Elbe and 8 to 13 degrees further southwest.

There will be a lot of clouds in some areas on Wednesday night - temporary relief is most likely to be possible in the northeast half.

In the southwest half, however, showery rain is possible, and it can be heavier near the Alps.

Temperature minimums 5 to 0 degrees, in the east and northeast up to -2 degrees.

On Wednesday, persistent precipitation is possible in the south under cloudy skies, and snow is possible at higher altitudes in the Alps.

For the remaining parts of the country, the DWD expects only a little rain and sunny breaks during the day.

It will be sunniest from the North Sea to Berlin and Brandenburg.

The highs on Wednesday are expected to be 6 degrees at sea and 7 to 12 degrees otherwise.

Partly cloudy, partly partly cloudy on Thursday night.

Fog formation in some areas.

Some rain, especially on the edge of the Alps, and snow at higher altitudes.

Cooling to +4 to -2 degrees.

According to meteorologist Dominik Jung, March started off significantly too warm

If you just look at the temperatures of the first three days in March 2024 compared to the average temperature from 1961 to 1990, it becomes clear: compared to the average temperature of these years, it has been an average of 6.23 degrees warmer across Germany in the past few days.

The difference between the minimum temperature was 3.4 degrees and the average maximum temperature from 1961 to 1990 was 9.4 degrees.

In addition, the average temperature after the first three days of March is 7.4 degrees, almost 3 degrees above its average temperature of 4.6 degrees.

But after the record February and the spring-like start of March, what happens next in the rest of the month?

In its long-term forecast, the CFS predicts that March will have a temperature deviation of one to two degrees above the new average temperature for the years 1991 to 2020.

And the ensemble forecast until March 20th also predicts average temperatures of ten to eleven degrees for Berlin.

According to the ensemble forecast, there could be some precipitation again from March 10th.

But no rain is expected until then.

These are the forecasts for the rest of March

And the second weekend in March?

Will spring show up here in such splendor as it does on the first weekend of the month?

According to Wetter.net expert Jung, this is likely to be the case.

“Overall, it remains spring-like mild.” Next Saturday he expects temperatures of 9 to 16 degrees and on Sunday “with a mix of sun and clouds” 8 to 15 degrees.

According to the meteorologist, heavy rainfall and even sleet showers will only be possible again on Monday next week with a total of 7 to 13 degrees - then especially on the Baltic Sea.
