President s, "luckily", are not monarchs and do not have to agree with the laws they promulgate, President Sergio Mattarella said Tuesday.
"When the president of the republic promulgates a law, he does not make the law his own, he does not agree with it, he simply does his duty," Mattarella told manager of the journalistshealth fund CASAGIT.
"When the chambers used to approve laws, the king beforepromulgating them had to affix his sanction to him, that is his agreement on the merits, because he also had attributed to himthe legislative power.
"Luckily that is no longer the case.
The President of theRepublic is not a sovereign, happily, and therefore he does not have this power".
