The Municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, is officially a 'Sustainable Tourist Destination', according to the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), the international body born from the push of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Organization of tourism (UNWTO).

The ceremony for the delivery of the certification reserved for entities that promote the sustainability and social responsibility of the tourism system was held in the city council hall.


    "Combining tourism policies with sustainability is possible and necessary - said the mayor Michele Angiolini -. Today Montepulciano achieves an ambitious objective which places it at the center of the international panorama, being the first among small and medium-sized municipalities to have obtained this prestigious international certification Gstc. As we have always said, it is a recognition of the actions taken, but at the same time a formal commitment for an increasingly optimal management of tourism and more sustainable from an environmental, social and economic point of view".

Also present at the ceremony were representatives of Valoritalia which coordinated the working group and representatives of all the institutions involved in the candidacy: University of Siena, Consorzio del VinoNobile, Strada del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano e dei Saporidella Valdichiana Senese and the Arezzo Siena Chamber of Commerce.
