Kigali (Rwanda)
On April 7, Rwanda will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide: in one hundred days, 1 million people exterminated, most of them with machetes and the vast majority of Tutsi origin.
This tragedy, which has its roots in the distant past, was caused by the death of President Habyarimana, of Hutu origin, in an attack targeting the plane which was bringing him back from a summit in Tanzania.
For a long time after this genocide, relations between Paris and Kigali were execrable: accused of having blindly supported the genocidal Hutu regime, the French authorities always refuted this interpretation of the facts.
Then, in 2021, a voluminous report led by historian Vincent Duclert pointed out the
“heavy and overwhelming responsibilities”
of Paris.
The same year, Emmanuel Macron traveled to Kigali and, without apologizing, recognized
France's
“responsibility” .
