The former Secretary General of NATO Rasmussen accuses Olaf Scholz of being too hesitant in supporting Ukraine.

He also deals against Macron.

Berlin - Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen criticizes the leading Western heads of government for their course in dealing with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

He is particularly disappointed with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, but also with French President Macron.

, Rasmussen accuses Scholz of reacting “far too slowly, far too hesitantly.”

Significantly more decisive government action is needed from Germany.

In times of war, one cannot lead by following public opinion.

Olaf Scholz, however, “doesn’t seem like a leader”.

Regarding the current debate about arms deliveries, Rasmussen says: “I don’t understand why Germany doesn’t deliver Taurus.”

But the 71-year-old Dane also sharply criticized French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron.

France's low level of military aid to Ukraine is "shameful for one of the strongest military powers in Europe."

His move to deploy ground troops in Ukraine is just "talk" to cover up France's lack of support.

According to Rasmussen, in order to deter Putin, NATO must offer the Ukrainians accession even during the war.

This is the only way to deter Putin.

Otherwise, he would conclude “that he must simply continue the war indefinitely to prevent Ukraine from ever becoming a member of NATO.”

It is important to get out of this vicious circle.

The path was recently cleared for Sweden to join NATO.

Rasmussen was head of government in Denmark between 2001 and 2009 and then Secretary General of NATO until 2014.

He is currently co-chair of the International Working Group on Security Issues and Euro-Atlantic Integration
