An airline wants to document the weight data of its passengers.
Hundreds of people have already taken part.
But there is also criticism.
Helsinki – Security checks are standard at airports.
However, weight scales for humans are rather unusual.
In Helsinki they are now part of the airport's equipment.
Specifically: a low-cost airline from Finland wants to weigh its customers.
This is not only met with approval.
On social media, some users are positioning themselves against the airline's plan.
Finnish airline Finnair wants to weigh passengers in the future – for one reason
Finnair flies primarily between the United Kingdom and Finland.
It also offers flights to Berlin (Germany).
Since the beginning of February 2024, passengers departing from the Finnish capital Helsinki have had the opportunity to be weighed.
Kaisa Tikkanen, spokeswoman for Finnair, said: “So far, more than 500 volunteer customers have taken part in the weighings.”
The reason for this latest move is quite simple.

Finnair says it will collect data by weighing volunteer customers and their hand luggage.
Weighing is completely voluntary and anonymous and should only be used to optimize flights.
“Each aircraft has a set maximum weight to ensure a safe take-off, and this weight must not be exceeded,” the airline explains the move.
The last measurements were carried out in 2017 and 2018.
Now the airline wants to collect new data.
This is already practice at other airlines; Air New Zealand has been weighing passengers since 2023.
“I’m disgusted”: Social media users not enthusiastic about airline plans
Although Finnair says it collects “weighing data only for the average calculations necessary for safe flight operations,” some users expressed opposition to the plan.

“Finnair wants to start weighing passengers, did I read that correctly?
I am shocked and disgusted.
When could a plane not take off because a passenger was overweight?" commented one user.
Other users even accused the Finnish airline of “fatshaming”.
An influencer was once refused a return flight by another airline because of her weight.
However, the company emphasized that “the collected data will in no way be linked to the customer's personal data.” The collected measurements will be passed on to the Finnish Transport and Communications Authority, which will use them to calculate aircraft balance and loading.
In 2023, an EasyJet flight from Lanzarote to Liverpool was unable to take off because the weight limits for weather conditions were exceeded.
