The area in the center of Gröbenzell, where the vegetable stand was once located, has been deserted for a long time.

Some people even call it an “eyesore”.

But that should change.

Gröbenzell – Agenda 21 is intended to shape the area.

The offer comes from the church.

The local council decided to at least have the ideas examined.

Since the greengrocer had to dismantle her stand in autumn 2022, the paved square has been deserted.

For FDP local councilor Klaus Coy, the approximately 70 square meters on the grounds of the Catholic church are “an eyesore” for Kirchenstrasse.

Now the church has offered Agenda 21 the chance to design the area.

“It could create a meeting point for young and old,” said Agenda 21 spokesman Thomas Schubert, who is relaunching the “Bank and Tree” project with the Transport/Mobility Working Group.

Benches, tables and play equipment

The idea for this came about three years ago in the settlement ecology working group.

In cooperation with the vocational school for metal construction and technical product design, the teacher there, Margret Prietzsch, created the first benches in Gröbenzell.

Representing Agenda 21, Andrea Schuster (SPD), consultant for planning and local development, and Walter Voit (Greens), consultant for transport, energy and climate protection, submitted an application to the local council for “conclusion of a contract for the use of a church-owned space by the “Agenda 21”.

Accordingly, the group would like to “take on this challenge and expand the space according to their ideas” in order to then make it accessible to the general public.

Their plans include benches, tables and smaller play equipment.

Mayor Martin Schäfer (UWG) made it clear at the most recent municipal council meeting that the project could certainly not be financed from Agenda 21's annual 5,000 euro budget and brought the municipality into play as a financier.

The local council decided unanimously to have the ideas examined by the administration and to enter into appropriate negotiations.

Footpaths concept

In the best case scenario, the whole thing will be implemented based on existing contracts for the benches that have already been built on the lawn in front of the St. Johann Baptist Church.

Agenda 21 is suitable for care and maintenance, said spokesman Schubert, who was also present.

He spoke of a possible “initial spark” for additional benches in the area: “We are not installing standard benches, the students are already there.”

In addition, Agenda 21 submitted an “application to create a footpath concept for Gröbenzell” via Andrea Schuster and Walter Voit.

Similar to the methodology of the cycle path concept from 2018, it is intended to analyze and evaluate the current situation.

“Something has to be done for pedestrians,” said Voit.

Mayor Schäfer and his deputy Martin Runge (Greens), among others, had a similar view, but Schäfer stated: “We will not be able to call for the eight million euros for the bicycle concept here.”

The members of the local council finally voted for a motion from Klaus Coy (FDP), who suggested taking the ideas from Agenda 21, which had already been worked out in great detail, and discussing them in the committees.
