After nearly 24 hours in police custody, rebellious elected official and activist Damien Cassé was released.
He had been heard since Tuesday afternoon, following a rape complaint filed by his partner, the LFI deputy for Seine-et-Marne Ersilia Soudais.
The police arrested him in Noisiel (Seine-et-Marne), where he is an opposition municipal councilor.
He was then placed in police custody in Dammarie-les-Lys.
“We welcome this rapid release which demonstrates great respect for the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence.
Mr. Cassé regrets the public nature of this procedure and reserves the right to take legal action against all those who undermine his presumption of innocence,” his lawyer Yassine Bouzrou responded to Le Parisien.
His partner, who was in conflict with her partner, had filed a complaint against him in the 7th arrondissement of Paris on Saturday evening.
The facts occurred, according to his complaint, on the night of February 29 to March 1 at the family home in Villeparisis.
A blatant investigation was opened by the Meaux public prosecutor, “on counts of rape by spouse, moral harassment, malicious telephone calls and psychological violence”.
It was entrusted to the sub-directorate of the Melun Judicial Police.
Maître Yassine Bouzrou, lawyer for Damien Cassé, “strongly contests the accusations brought against him”.
As for Ersilia Soudais, her lawyer Jade Dousselin welcomes “the great speed of justice in this case, which demonstrates, if necessary, that it took the full measure of the seriousness of the facts denounced”.
She calls for “that all light will be shed in calm and respect for the secrecy of the investigation”.
This Wednesday, La France insoumise notified its activist, this Wednesday, of his exclusion as a precautionary measure from the party, after a complaint filed on March 2 by his partner, the rebellious MP Ersilia Soudais.
