The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is increasing its admission prices.

This is part of a larger upgrading strategy.

Nevertheless, the museum attracts more visitors.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Increased visitor numbers, visual upgrade of the entrance area, innovative special exhibitions: The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen has developed into a success story.

The district committee has now unanimously decided to reissue the fee regulations, combined with an increase in admission prices.

The district council will finally discuss the matter on March 20th.

Rainer Knapp first reported to the district councilors about the renovation work, which has enabled the district museum to significantly increase its attractiveness in recent years.

The “extension opened in 2019, which made more elaborate special exhibitions possible, and the entrance area with the cloakrooms, which was redesigned in 2023,” would have helped attract more visitors, the treasurer explained.

With the hiring of Dr.

Constanze Werner, as full-time director, special exhibitions were added to the program two years ago.

Knapp recalled “Go to Momo” in honor of the 50th anniversary of Michael Ende's novel.

“And more exhibitions will follow,” promised the treasurer.

The fee regulations on Ludwigstrasse were last adjusted almost two years ago.

Compared to other, sometimes smaller museums, the entry prices are low, Knapp noted.

Due to the specifications, many visitors were able to get to the Werdenfels Museum at reduced rates anyway.

“A moderate increase of 1 euro to 1.50 euros per entry therefore seems appropriate,” he said, also recalling inflation and increases in personnel costs.

Children and students up to the age of 14 continue to come to the house for free, while young people and students pay significantly less.

For adults, the price per museum visit increases from 4.50 euros to 5.50 euros.

In addition, it is planned to adjust the costs for permanent and special shows.

New offerings include group tours (70 euros) and director's tours of the special exhibition (120 euros).

The Werdenfels Museum charges 40 euros for school classes for guided tours with admission.

Knapp looked a little further into the past.

Since 2000, the number of visitors to the district museum has been between 6,000 and 7,000 per year.

Then in 2019, the year it reopened after the expansion, almost 8,100 guests were welcomed.

Due to the corona pandemic, the values fell sharply, but since the opening of the “50 Years of Momo Exhibition” in July last year, 6,000 visitors alone have passed through the entrance door.

“This has developed positively,” emphasizes Knapp.

And it should go even higher: “The museum management is forecasting a number of 10,000 visits by 2024.”
