Excitement again in the Republic of Moldova: The autonomous region of Gagauzia is asking the next country after Russia for help.

This time it's Turkey.

Chișinău – There has been increased reporting about the Transnistria region in the Republic of Moldova, especially since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

The pro-Russian rulers of the breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova have asked Russia for “protection” in a resolution.

But it's not just Transnistria that's causing problems for Chișinău: Gagauzia also wants influence from other states.

Just two days after Transnistria, Gagauzia also asked Moscow for protection.

And now the region is asking another state for help.

The Gagauz autonomy expects that Turkey will influence the Moldovan authorities and not allow the special legal status of the region to be violated, as the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, explained in an interview with the RIA Novosti news agency.

Gagauzia leader Hutsul appeals to Türkiye

Hutsul previously appealed to Turkey to urge Chișinău to abandon attempts to destabilize the region and manipulate Gagauz autonomy.

In September last year she spoke to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan about the discriminatory policies of the ruling party and the President of Moldova towards the Gagauz people.

“We hope that Ankara will influence the Moldovan authorities and not allow our special legal status to be violated,” Hutsul said on the sidelines of the World Youth Festival in Sochi, Russia.

Gagauzia and the Gagauz people enjoy great sympathy in Turkey because they belong to the group of Turkic-speaking peoples.

Erdogan and his ministers regularly visit the region.

Hutsul made her first trip abroad after her election victory to Turkey.

Attention is constantly drawn to the special relationship.

The fact that Gagauzia, in contrast to Turkey, is predominantly Christian does not disturb the relationship.

Election in Gagauzia: Chisinau does not recognize the winner

Last spring, Gagauzia held elections for the head of the region;

Hutsul, a Shor Party candidate, won.

The Moldovan authorities declared this party unconstitutional in June and accused it, among other things, of collaborating with Russia.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu does not recognize Hutsul as a member of the government.

Gagauzia is an autonomous region in southern Moldova and favors rapprochement with Russia.

Chisinau aims to be close to Europe.

Transnistria: Worries about Russian attack, comparisons with Ukraine situation before the war

The request from Transnistria for Russia's protection is reminiscent of that made by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine in February 2022.

At that time, Moscow used this as an opportunity for its large-scale attack on Ukraine.

The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is located in eastern Moldova on the border with Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military fears that Russia could attack from Transnistria towards the nearby southwestern Ukrainian port city of Odessa on the Black Sea.
