Le Figaro Marseille
It’s a most timely escape.
This Tuesday, March 5, an inmate incarcerated in Aix-en-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône), escaped from the penitentiary establishment in which he was incarcerated,
Le Figaro
learned from corroborating sources.
According to our information, this inmate sentenced to a
“short sentence”
in correctional and with a profile deemed
“not very dangerous”
took advantage of an activity provided by his exit support structure (SAS) to leave prison guards alone.
This type of program, which has its own structure, is intended for prisoners whose sentence is less than two years and is nearing its end.
In theory, these prisoners must present
“a low risk of escape”
and are allowed to participate in outdoor tasks.
Inmate fled after asking to 'relieve a need'
The accused, who was due to leave his prison in less than two months, escaped the surveillance of his guards during a
“gardening activity”
which was carried out outside.
According to a source, the inmate asked one of the guards to
“relieve himself behind a tree”
.
The request accepted, the man took the opportunity to run towards a forest, where a car driven by an accomplice was waiting for him.
According to a police source, the duo fled in the vehicle towards Marseille and were actively sought by the Bouches-du-Rhône police force on Tuesday evening.
The accused could have been convicted of acts of
“possession”
and
“transport of narcotics”
.
The reasons for his escape are not known.
Last February, two prisoners at the Aix-Luynes penitentiary center were violently attacked by fellow inmates while they were still serving their sentences.
One of them, accused in the case of the triple assassination in the Bassens city, was stabbed while walking as he was preparing to be taken out to appear before the Bouches-du-Rhône Assize Court .
On the night of February 17 to 18, a man known for drug trafficking was killed in his cell after being beaten by his fellow inmate.
An investigation had been opened for “assassination” by the Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor’s office.
