If you want to drive along the south bank of Walchensee, you have to pay a toll.

This fee will be slightly increased this season.

But there are exceptions.

Jachenau – The tolls on the roads on the south bank of Walchensee and between Wallgau and Vorderriß are becoming more expensive.

From this season onwards, a single journey for cars costs 6 euros instead of the previous 5 euros.

Walchensee south bank: The last toll increase was in 2020

Robert Krebs from the Tölzer Forestry Company cites the “enormous costs” that state forests incur in maintaining the roads as the reason for the fee increase.

The two toll roads are not publicly dedicated roads, but private forest roads.

The latter therefore bears the burden of road construction.

“So we are responsible for paving the roads, closing potholes, repairing bridges and their railings and other things,” explains Krebs.

The material costs for this have increased by 20 to 30 percent in the last three to four years.

“So all we do is pass on the price increases.”

After the last toll increase in 2020, the next increase was actually necessary earlier, says Krebs.

However, in addition to the introduction of parking fees on the south bank of Walchensee by the municipality of Jachenau, they did not want to increase the toll.

Toll roads in Jachenau: Price for season ticket remains the same

Krebs also points out that the forestry company used comparative values from the Tyrolean neighborhood.

In the Karwendel, the toll fees were increased to 7 euros last year, says Krebs, for example for the road towards Eng/Ahornboden.

“But we didn’t want to go to the level of the Tyroleans,” says Krebs.

In addition to the single ticket for cars, motorcycles, minibuses, tractors and quads, there are also other tariffs for the toll roads.

“Permanent permits” can also be purchased for one or two weeks, which is interesting for vacationers, for example.

Here the price increases to 15 or 25 euros (previously: 10/15 euros).

The toll for a month now costs 35 instead of 25 euros, the price for a season ticket remains the same at 50 euros.

According to Krebs, these season tickets are predominantly purchased by locals.

“We didn’t want to put any additional strain on them.”

Citizens of Jachenau do not have to pay tolls

For motorhomes, cars with caravans and minibuses with more than eight seats, a single trip costs 12 euros (previously: 10).

The prices of permanent permits do not change.

A week costs 30 euros, two weeks 50 euros, a month 70 euros and the entire season 150 euros.

By the way: Anyone who has purchased a toll ticket can use both toll roads during the period of validity.

Business people and tradesmen who drive to properties in the area of the toll roads do not have to pay tolls.

This also applies to working people who provide confirmation that their shortest route to work is via a toll road.

Citizens of Jachenau and the town of Walchensee also do not have to pay tolls.

Card payments at all toll stations from this year

According to Krebs, there is another innovation on the Wallgau-Vorderriß toll road this year: it is possible to pay the toll by card.

“We are currently in the process of converting the toll stations and hope to have it finished by the start of the season shortly before Easter.” In Einsiedl and Niedernach you have been able to pay by card since last year, “and it has proven successful,” like cancer.

Creating the technical requirements is complex.

There is no fiber optic connection in the remote toll stations through which the map data can be transmitted.

“That’s why we set up small, inconspicuous transmission towers,” explains the forestry company representative.

For example, there is already one in Vorderriß.

“It’s not noticeable at all,” says Krebs.

In the toll stations themselves, only a drawer for the corresponding computer needs to be installed.
