He stood for the Bavarian way of life like hardly anyone else in Freising: Theo Meindl.

Now the well-known folk musician has died at the age of 92.

Freising

- With him, the city and district lose what is called a loyal soul: loyal to his birthplace and hometown of Freising, loyal to his Anna, with whom he was able to celebrate his stone wedding, and loyal to his second great love in life, the folk and Stubnmusi.

Theo Meindl grew up with four siblings.

The love of folk music was instilled in him at an early age by his mother, who encouraged him to learn the zither and thus laid the foundation for his life as a musician.

For his personal happiness, he met his wife Anna while taking zither lessons at the age of 18.

The two married in 1956 and the foundation for the Meindl family music was laid.

Together they have four sons: Theodor junior, Klaus, Bernhard and Robert, all of whom also discovered their love for folk music.

In addition to folk music, he also loves the mountains

All six Meindls form the Meindl family music group, have been on the stages for well over 50 years, cultivating real customs and true folk music.

Although they win many prizes, the Meindls always remain down-to-earth.

Theo Meindl's life is characterized by continuity.

After the Second World War, he completed an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman at the Schlüter company in Freising and later trained as an industrial engineer, remaining loyal to the traditional Freising company as an employer until his retirement.

He has been a committed member of the Freising section of the German Alpine Club for over 60 years and is made an honorary member.

He was a tour manager for decades and founded the Alpine Club choir almost 40 years ago.

His performances fill over 20 photo albums

Of course, Theo Meindl's life, work and contributions to folk music did not go unnoticed.

In 1981 he was invited to the Federal President's New Year's reception - as one of 25 citizens.

Anna and Theo Meindl have been recipients of the Federal Cross of Merit and the Silver Citizens' Medal of the City of Freising since 1982 and received the Freising District Culture Prize, which was awarded for the first time in 1982.

Theo Meindl's love for folk music is also reflected in the fact that he recorded all the performances in over 20 photo albums.

Theo Meindl was always modest and unpretentious; you could feel his happiness when he was able to play folk music with his family - whether at Christmas and Thanksgiving in churches or in a secular setting.

And Theo Meindl was distinguished by something else: his unwavering trust in God.

And he never forgot to thank those who made the performances possible for him and the family music and who supported them; he had a sincere “God bless you” for everyone.

Now it is time for the city and district to say “God bless” Theo Meindl.

Last Honor:

Funeral Rosary is on Thursday, March 7th, 5:30 p.m., in St. Peter and Paul.

The funeral service will be held at St. Peter and Paul's on Friday, March 8, 10:30 a.m.

The funeral will then take place in the Neustift cemetery.

On his 80th birthday, Theo Meindl gave an interview to the FT in April 2011 and reported, not without pride, that engagements for his ensembles were a sure-fire success: “We never applied anywhere.”
