The start of the concert series to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the parish church of the Nativity of Mary in Wartenberg was an impressive soloist concert with an integrated video film of a church tour.

Wartenberg - At the opening, Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D, played by Christian Rott on the organ, rang out from the organ gallery.

Stephanie Weltrich-Streit (soprano) and Markus Kunzendorf (tenor) intoned “For in His Hand” by Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

The listeners were able to follow these musical performances on a screen broadcast in the sanctuary.

The break between the pieces by the organist and the singers was used to show an interesting video film of the church tour from Rott and Kunzendorf up to the bell tower.

Rott welcomed the numerous guests by pointing out that it was not just the church that was celebrating an anniversary: it was also the 200th birthday of Peter Cornelius, whose work “Our Father” Rott then intoned in Latin.

He also impressed as an accompaniment on the digital piano - together with Stephanie Weltrich-Streit and Markus Kunzendorf, who sang the touching Ave Maria on the 100th anniversary of Theodore Dubois' death.

The final evening song was followed by minutes of applause.

Before the concert, Pastor Gregor Bartkowski thanked Rott for the concert series he had planned with various actors.

Bartkowski also spoke about the 300-year-old church: He hoped “that a ceremonial consecration of the new bells can take place at the end of May”.

Today it is difficult to understand how a community that was once much smaller was able to build this magnificent church and how many subsequent generations have preserved the church, said the pastor, visibly impressed.
