The Weilheim-Schongau district will officially join the Munich transport and tariff association from January 1, 2025.

Today Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter handed over a generous funding notice in Lenggries.

District - The Free State of Bavaria covers up to 90 percent of the costs incurred through the funding program to create comprehensive network structures.

Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter handed over a corresponding funding application to District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß in Lenggries last Wednesday.

In addition to the Weilheim-Schongau district, the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Miesbach and Rosenheim districts also receive support.

The total volume of funding for the districts amounts to 34.4 million euros.

“The district’s accession to MVV is a strong signal for the development of local public transport in our homeland.

It is a crucial step towards creating a uniform and attractive transport structure that benefits all citizens.

The financial support from the Free State is an important component in the implementation of the MVV network expansion,” explained District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß.

Transport Minister Bernreiter is also happy “that we did it” and highlighted the advantages: “Passengers benefit from an attractive network tariff, uniform passenger information and coordinated transport offers.” The feedback from the expansion area is very positive.

“That’s why we’re happy to support the districts and cities in this regard and spend a lot of money on it,” said the minister.

The Free State has made the expansion possible with the funding program to create comprehensive network structures and is financing one-off and permanent costs with up to 90 percent.

The money flowed into new ticket printers, timetable notices and the adaptation of ticket machines.

The Free State also supports municipalities in compensating for loss of revenue by transport companies, which arise because MVV tickets are often cheaper than previous tickets.

You only need one ticket to travel on different means of transport.

“We are bringing the city and countryside in the south of Bavaria even closer together,” stated Bernreiter.

That's not the end of it, MVV will continue to grow.

The Weilheim-Schongau district has already decided to join on January 1, 2025.

The districts of Landsberg am Lech and Mühldorf am Inn could also join at the same time if appropriate committee decisions are made.

The districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the city and district of Landshut could follow in 2026.

Bernreiter is “optimistic that we are making progress,” that the network areas will become larger and perhaps even grow together one day.

“We are investing a lot in the railway region of Bavaria,” emphasized Bernreiter.

MVV managing director Bernd Rosenbusch is also pleased about this.

He sees simplicity as the decisive criterion for successful public transport.

It is a huge improvement that only one ticket is required in the entire area.

“And in a year, the new check-in/check-out procedure with automatic fare calculation for easy ticket purchasing will be added,” announced Rosenbusch.

He also has plans for the vehicles.

Some buses have already been repainted.

Inside, the aim is to create a feel-good atmosphere and attract passengers, among other things, through new upholstery design, lighting and floors.

“Verbund is more than just a tariff,” said Rosenbusch.

But the improvements alone are a good reason to use public transport.
