At around 12:50 p.m., the 41-year-old was driving south on the local road from state road 2518 to Heimenegg.
After a left turn, his car veered off the road to the right for unknown reasons.
About 20 meters further he crashed head-on into a tree.
An attentive road user came to the scene of the accident a short time later and provided first aid.
The driver had to be rescued from the vehicle by emergency services.
Due to his serious injuries, the 41-year-old was flown from the scene of the accident to a hospital in a rescue helicopter.
The route between Heimenegg and the state road was closed in both directions by the fire department while the accident was being investigated.
