The Herzog-Tassilo-Realschule was born 60 years ago this year.

These were the milestones and this is how the anniversary was celebrated:

Erding - The beginnings in September 1964 were extremely modest: The Erding secondary school started in barracks on the Erding fairground.

Students - girls were not yet admitted - had to bring five marks with them to register and pass a trial lesson.

It was only two years later that the secondary school moved into a new building on Münchener Straße, which was repeatedly expanded over the decades.

Yesterday the Herzog-Tassilo-Realschule (HTR) - it has had the name since 1968 - celebrated its 60th anniversary with a ceremony and open day.

Mayor Max Gotz, who attended school here for two years as an “outsourced high school student,” recalled “that the school was built on a greenfield site.

Altenerding, which later grew so much, was still a rural area at the time.” Even the neighboring clinic only went into operation in 1973.

The students played a crucial role in the three-hour ceremony, as shown here in a skit about the development of the teaching materials.

Ministerial representative Manfred Brodschelm reviewed the history of the HTR.

The first year consisted of 92 students and twelve teachers.

When we moved into the new building there were already 328 students, and class sizes of 36 children were normal.

Until 1997 it was still a boys' secondary school, only then were girls admitted; there were 26 in the first school year.

In 2000, Erding also became a six-stage secondary school.

It grew to almost 1,200 young people until the Oberding secondary school opened a good ten years ago, initially a branch of Erding.

In six decades of school history there have been seven directors; Judith Heugel is currently running the business, the first woman at the helm.

Brodschelm praised the HTR as a “place of commitment and joy of life”.

Gotz had previously taken a swipe at current school policy when he pointed out how important music and art are for the cognitive abilities of young people.

The secondary school does justice to this with many offerings in addition to compulsory lessons.

He received applause for this.

Elisabeth Friesinger, the longest-serving teacher at the HTR, experienced half of the school's history as an on-site educator.

She recalled the “rapid progress” – from chalk to alcohol-smelling matrices and the overhead projector to the interactive blackboard and teacher laptop.

For her, “learning is relationship with mutual respect as the basis”.

Friesinger also said there needs to be a lot more praise.

Over the decades, she has seen with her students that “distraction has increased, but young people are still achieving their goals.”

Elke Kast, chairwoman of the parents’ council, was “enthusiastic about how the children enriched this ceremony”.

After her, the Ukrainian children from the bridge class promptly appeared to sing a self-composed song about friendship - a goosebumps moment.

Heugel, who has been at the HTR for two years, looked back on recent history, starting with the easing of the corona pandemic and the reawakening of school life: “School trips were finally possible again.” The bridge class introduced in the fall was a big challenge.

“The progress that the young Ukrainians are making is all the more gratifying,” praised Heugel before she presented the range of lessons, voluntary courses and interest groups.

There are even etiquette lessons at the HTR – “with initial successes,” says the headmistress.

District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer said that the schools are dear to the district, but also expensive.

“Ten percent of the administrative budget goes to educational institutions, currently 25 million euros.” The secondary schools are perfectly embedded in a diverse educational landscape in the Erding district.

According to Bayerstorfer, the secondary schools should see it as a great appreciation “that many children prefer to go here, even though they could also switch to high school with their grades.”

After the ceremony, many families streamed into the school building - with fourth graders who will continue the HTR's history starting in the fall.
