Anyone who wants to buy something at Munich Airport can now do so from a robot: The “Snackbot” Jeeves offers guests chilled soft drinks and snacks in the security area.

Munich - Lufthansa staff have been on strike regularly for weeks.

And even if passengers at Munich Airport cannot rely on their trip taking place as planned, they can at least look forward to one innovation at Munich Airport: The snack robot “Jeeves” has been serving guests since Monday, March 4th with chilled soft drinks and snacks.

He is currently driving around levels 4 and 5 of Terminal 2.

It is 110 centimeters tall and moves autonomously, says the Munich Airport press office.

Snack robot offers drinks and snacks to passengers at Munich Airport

Originally intended for the hotel and healthcare industry, “Jeeves” is the first such service robot to be used at an airport.

His name may sound familiar to some people: it is based on the butler Jeeves from the novels by British author PG Wodehouse.

The Munich start-up “Robotise” developed it.

According to the airport, the use of robotics is not only to improve logistics, but also to test its acceptance among guests.

That's why a subsidiary of Munich Airport and Lufthansa are spending a year researching how "Jeeves" is received by passengers.

The project is part of Munich Airport’s orientation as a “Premium Innovation Hub”.

So far, only a single copy of “Jeeves” is in transit in the security area.

Robot “Jeeves” can be operated via touchscreen

If you want to buy something from the robot, you can choose between cashless payment methods such as credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

“Jeeves” stops automatically when passengers approach or get in its way.

The purchasing process then takes place via a large touchscreen.

However, according to a spokesman, “Jeeves” cannot speak – even though his smiling face may seem so.

It remains to be seen to what extent passengers will accept the offer once the strike is over.
